Blizzard bulking up Diablo dev team

Company job postings call for art leads to work on unannounced PC title from the crew behind the first two Diablo games.

It's been more than four and a half years since the Diablo II: Lord of Destruction expansion pack came out, and that time has apparently done nothing to diminish fans' enthusiasm for an unannounced sequel to the action role-playing series.

Even now, the slightest hint of Diablo III's existence is enough to get the Internet buzzing. Whether it's the acknowledgement that Blizzard North employees were working on an unannounced project when the studio was shuttered last August, or the e-mail of a Czech musician claiming to have recorded music for the project, rumors of Diablo III persist, popping up every few months to rile the Blizzard faithful.

This month's riling comes straight from Blizzard itself, which has posted a number of intriguing entries on the jobs section of its Web site. The positions, which were posted yesterday, call for an art director and various leads to join "the team behind Diablo I and II" for "an unannounced PC project."

The job descriptions offer few clues as to the nature of the next project. The lead 3D environment artist position calls for a candidate with a solid grasp of form, color, and light who "has experience modeling and texturing a diverse visual range of characters and creatures." Blizzard's also looking for a lead 3D character artist with "experience modeling and texturing a diverse visual range of characters and creatures" and a lead 3D character animator who has "experience animating both human and non-humanoid characters." The lead 3D character animator position also calls for knowledge of inverse kinematics and other facets of 2D and 3D animation, suggesting that the game will have some detailed visuals. Each position calls for familiarity with 3ds Max, while the lead 3D character animator will also need to know Maya and Character Studio.

Online speculation immediately turned to thoughts of Diablo, a franchise Blizzard has previously acknowledged wanting to continue at some point. Currently the company's only announced projects are the long-in-development Starcraft: Ghost for consoles and the Burning Crusade expansion for World of Warcraft.

Blizzard representatives did not immediately return requests for comment.

Very interesting, and I hope myself its Diablo 3. But then again.... you just never know.

i doubt its diablo 3, and if it is i'm sure its just going to be anothe game they'll slap together to hopefully sell just off of the name alone

i hope they bring back a game like diablo 1, with tons of just wrong things to see

Didn't all the masterminds of the Diablo series leave blizzard and start their own company?

I think some of them left, wasn't one of the guys behind Guild Wars from Blizzard? I just hope that if it does come out it retains the action element of the series, instead of the slower combat pace of MMO's. (would anyone else love to see frozen orb in full 3D??)

I don't see how a new team couldn't pull it off just as well.

Take the same basic formula, upgrade the graphics, add some new special abilites, update the enemies, and then pen a script.

Shouldn't be too hard to make a good game if they keep with the formula of the original two.

Alternatively they could shit in a box and put "Blizzard" on it and sell millions. This is a compliment and not a slam
:)

Blizzard lost everyone. All the people who made the warcraft and starcraft series. They lost the diablo devs and the the initial Wow devs. They even lost so many people on starcraft Ghost they have had to outsource the finish of the game.

It is no even remotely close to the same company it once was. They had the best talent in the industry, but apparently all that success just pissed vivendi right off. Blizzard will ride Wow for all it's worth but even wow started to go downhill in beta once there devs left.

Now im not predicting doom for Blizzard anytime soon, but there will never be a diablo III worthy of it's predecessors. There is no magic formula for coding a game. If there was all games would be tripple A titles going gold and making massive profits.

You don't lose all of the hottest devs in the gaming industry and then continue to make tripple A titles. The devs they have lost have went on to do other things. There best talent started Flagship studios and there soon to be releasing hellgate london. Some of the other devs did guildwars.

Of course you can!! Sure, those guys were really damn good - but as long as you hire the right new people, they will make good games too.

You seem to think there is no way that there is other good talent out there. They just have to be found and hired. Really, all it takes is ONE guy (or girl I suppose) to have the vision for a good game, and then just hire the lackies who take direction from him. As long as the director makes sure everything is done to his liking, then you have a winner on your hands, regardless of who does the actual programming.

They've been doing this for quite awhile, advertising for new positions... nothing new.

What. Are. You. Talking. About.

Just because people at blizzard who worked on some of the hottest titles ever moved on to persue other things, doesn't mean blizzard lost all its talent. There is a boat load of talent out there, and theres alot of those people at blizz right now. If you somehow think that WoW went downhill after beta... then your insane. I was in the beta, and it sucked. The WoW that I play today, is leaps and bounds better than the beta. Blizzard is still one of the best game compaines out there.

They left to make Arenanet (Guild Wars) and Flagship Studios (Hellgate : London)

There isn't much original/old school Blizzard left :(

Dont put word's into my posts, I never said there was no other talent out there. But it is in short supply. Just how many blockbuster titles do you see a year in the pc market?

Puzzle me that!

They lost everyone, that had anything to do with starcraft and diablo and warcraft. These were the people who made it happen, they can't be replaced. If they could be replaced then that means the gaming industry is just full of creative and tealented individuals. Thats sadly not the case. Theres great designers, great coders and animators. Then theres the rest of the people.

Yes it does, it absolutely does. Rock n roll racing, the Vikings, starcraft, warcraft, diablo, and wow were all the children of Blizzards ex dev team. And UNTIL blizzard releases a product that equals or at least compares to the formers devs titles then it is my contention that they have lost all there talent, they lost everyone who got them where there at today.

For one, Starcraft: Ghost had its engine outsourced FROM DAY ONE. That was the plan. Blizzard had no experience with FPS type engines and considering coding and graphical engines have never been their strong point, they opted for Nihilistic Inc. to do the job, while they did all the gameplay design, art, and sound (the stuff that makes Blizzard games Blizzard). They ran into unpublicized troubles with Nihilistic and are no longer partnered with them, with their official statement being "their job is done".

As is common in the industry, many of the WoW devs are one-time hires, ie. big projects require a lot more resources than in-house employees so they hire people for that single project. Square-Enix is pretty famous for this. After every DragonQuest or Final Fantasy you'll hear about a lot of layoffs; it's simply because they hired a lot of 3D artists and occassionally coders for that one project (obviously not because the game didn't turn out well since every FF since FFVI and every DQ since the beginning of time have sold an amount of copies that dwarf even the Sims franchise). Very nearly all of the actual long-term developers in Blizzard that worked on WoW are still working with Blizzard, either on WoW itself or on another project.

The original Diablo team, a.k.a. Blizzard North, was actually a company that Blizzard acquired back in the 90's called Condor. The only franchise they worked with was Diablo. Yes, due to conflicts with Vivendi, 17 members of Blizzard North left. The rest was absorbed by the main body of Blizzard and Blizzard North was disbanded.

I'd like to know which developers that were involved with all the non-Blizzard North titles left. As far as I know that is not true. People like Bill Roper and the Schaefers (ie. the big names) were working purely on the Diablo franchise.

Edit: I should also note that at the end of the development cycle, Diablo II had 48 employees working on it (which at the time was a colossal number, most AAA games of the time only had 18-24 people, not including playtesters... actually it's still a damn big number).

There's one word to discribe what you are, a HATER. A Blizzard Hater if you will. I'm sorry you can't argue with 5million+ active users in WoW, if thats not a sucess story I don't know what is. And what people are you talking about that left blizzard, other than the hand full that did Diablo? Its pretty obvious that Blizzard has a lot of talent.

^^ that is good, all companies need a refresh of staff now and then for fresh new ideas instead of old recycled ones.

i'd agree that blizzard is probably has the best company pedigree in gaming history (well nintendo is comparable). they rarely produce trash titles (if any). it IS true that the original talent behind wc1,2 diablo1,2 sc is gone. however, the new fresh talent did a very excellent job with WOW. WOW is still amazingly fun and the huge subscription numbers fortify its position as a great game.

of course, i for one still miss the original talent. i'd really love to see a SC2 or Diablo3 with the original teams, but its highly unlikely that is going to happen

I agree...WoW is probably the best game I've ever played in my life.

While a world of diablo or diablo 3 would be nice (hell, it would be amazing) I can't see it happening anytime soon. Thanks god for WoW and Titan Quest...

I've always thought that a World of Starcraft would be a great idea. I'd play a zergling. Only there would be a million of me.

http://www.gamingsteve.com/archives/2006/02/rumor_diablo_ii.php

It looks like the Diablo III rumor mill has started up once again with a seemingly innocent post on the jobs section of the Blizzard web site. A few days ago they posted a job for an art director and various leads to join "the team behind Diablo I and II" for "an unannounced PC project." I have been getting some inquires since then if Blizzard is indeed working on Diablo III and when is it going to come out?

Well, before I answer let me mention a few things. First, I don't want to get any of my friends at Blizzard in trouble, so from instead of mentioning "Diablo III" let's call this theoretical game "Beelzebub 3" and instead of "Blizzard" let's call them "Snowstorm" instead. Second, my information is quality stuff, but it is a little old, so take that with a gain of salt. Third, err, well, there is no third, so let's get into what I know!

Let's the obvious out of way, "Snowstorm" is indeed working on "Beelzebub 3". Not only are they working on it, but they have been working on this game for no less than the past four years. In fact, "Snowstorm North" nearly completed the game several years ago, but what they developed just "wasn't fun" and been quietly reworked. This was actually one of the key reasons why Snowstorm North was closed and everyone was relocated to Irvine-based Snowstorm, so that the bigwigs in Irvine could better track and follow the development of Beelzebub 3.

As for what to expect in to see in Beelzebub 3, believe it or not but those rumors that were floating around a few months ago about the game were fairly accurate. According to the rumors:

"Diablo 3 takes place in heaven. Hell is trying to take it over and it is AWESOME looking … Imagine the brightness of heaven being taken over by the darkness of hell … Imagine WoW but in a Diablo world in amount of size and playability … Also, guild housing is available in this game for those of you who know about it. They should have a gameplay demo to show at BlizzCon."

This information was pretty dead-on. It is true that Beelzebub 3 will be done in true 3D and it did indeed look freaking awesome. It is also true that Beelzebub 3 features a story between the conflicts of Heaven and Hell and contains a very cool feature where every single item in the game can change between a "light" version and a "dark" version. However this was also one of the problems with the original version of the game. Other than the ability for any item to visually change from light to dark it didn't affect the actual stats of the item or change the gameplay in any way. So the game has gone through a total rework to inject some "fun" into the gameplay and to make it feel like the Beelzebubs of old.

The core gameplay Beelzebub 3 will play pretty much like Beelzebub 1 and 2, but the game world will be much larger and provide a much deeper experience -- many more items, more levels when you go through the game for first time, more skills, more of everything. In addition, the multiplayer aspect will be greatly enhanced from the past installments and don't be surprised to see more than a couple of WoW-based concepts to leak over into the Beelzebub 3 universe ... such as two opposing factions (Alliance and Horde = Heaven and Hell), enhanced guild functionality, and maybe even mounts?!

As for when Beelzebub 3 will released, that one is easy to answer ... when it's done. Snowstorm is in no rush to finish this game and will release it only after they feel it's perfect. And after the fiasco of StarCraft: Ghost -- which has been announced for years and is currently going through its second round of redesign and reprogramming -- Snowstorm is in no rush to announce Beelzebub 3. Don't except an announcement until the game is near completion.

But there is some good news; that "leak" on the Snowstorm jobs page was no accident. If they are starting to leak information about Beelzebub 3 then they are starting to get closer to a final release. Of course for Snowstorm something "getting close" can mean two years from now.

Hopefully that will hold everyone over for the short term. Hopefully Beelzebub 3 will be announced at the next E3, I'll try to find out more before then and give everyone the dirt as I get it.

you all should quit thinking bad thoughts.

Diablo III is coming out soon! like, within 2 years! and it will be awesome!

well when it does, ill ressurect this thread to show you all! lol

diablo3 better be using directx10

who cares if the old staff left. blizzard will not release a game if it isn't up to their very high standards. so if it's bad, it just won't be released.

Even if Diablo III comes out at some point, I strongly doubt it will be of the same quality that Diablo II was. There is a big difference between Blizzard and Blizzard North :)

Are you reading challenged? try using www.dictionary.com since you can't comprehend my posts. Show me where I said I hated Blizzard, I own everyone of there titles they have ever made.

Furthermore why are you in this thread? You obviously dont have a damn clue who or what is being talked about. And on top of that wow was all but done before those people left, the only thing they needed to do was finish the server probelms they were having and wow could have launched. The servers still aren't fixed.

Here's some of the people that left.

Since the first round of Blizzards talent left others left havent been able to jump ship fast enough.

These werent just your average coders these were the best Blizzard had, and quite frankly some of the best in the industry. Why do you think all thses companies were lined up to get them when they left? Why do you think NCsoft was trying to get some of the old wow devs to leave?

The guys over at flagship have made it happen for blizzard since 1997, Warcraft III and starcraft and Diablo2 and 1.

You don't lose hit producers like that and claim it's all hunky doory. If your a raging Fan-boy of Blizzard that's perfectly fine. But what you need to realize is Blizzard is just a name, it's the people behind that name that you are actually a fan-boy of, and now there gone.

So, because the same people arent going to make the sequel, it means the game wouldnt be as good?

thats like saying that the next harry potter movie is gonna suck because of a different director!

I would very much like to see this become true also. loved Diablo I & II.

Yeah, but the biggest names attract the best talent. They can hire the best people out there because they have an excellent reputation. That's like saying mit or caltech is gonna be a bad school in 4 years because all the smart people will have graduated. No, they'll have people just as good because the best apply to go there.

WoW is in no way a finished project, they're always adding new content and features. The game has changed a hell of a lot since early beta, and the developers did a great job giving people what they asked for.

::Crosses fingers for Diablo III::

I spent a number of years playing Diablo II & LOD alone. Probably the best games I've ever played...certainly the most addicting. I really hope all of this is for real...I've been looking for a good Diablo-like game but haven't found any that live up to the real thing.

Uh...yea, generally that's what happens, espically with movies...

Sometimes it can work/be good, but a lot of the times they just fuck it up.

5million active users in WoW? O_O

That more than the population of my country. >.<
