Desktop bigger than display problem:

I've got a Mac Pro tower that's been giving me grief for the last few days. It used to be plugged into a 30" cinema at 2560x1600. Unfortunately, somebody kicked in my back door and the display walked off. So I pulled a 24" LG (1920x1200) out of retirement to hold me off until I decided on a replacement. When I first started everything up, the desktop was bigger than the display. I lose the top and the left. Check the resolution setting, and it had adjusted to the different resolution. So I fire up the console and shut it down. Power it back up and everything is where it's supposed to be. Sweet. Eventually, I wander off. When I come back the machine has turned off the monitor. I hit the keyboard and wake everything up. The desktop is back in too-big mode. It does this every time. On boot-up, everything is fine. As soon as it kills the monitor, big-ass desktop. I've played with the settings on the computer and monitor sides of the house, with no luck. I guess I could disable the turn-off monitor setting, but I would really rather that it all just work. Any ideas?
