Decent Scanner for slides?

Hi,

I'm looking to put all my grand parents' vintage (50's-70's) slides into digital form via computer. The slides seem to be somewhere between 1 7/8" and 2".

My question to you guys is...What is a half way decent scanner for converting these into digital images? Basically I want to pay the least amount possible, and get decent image quality.

Do you guys have any suggestions?

Unfortunately, you will have to pay a lot of money (typically more than $1,000) for a slide scanner unless you are willing to settle for used. The $100-ish scanners from the likes of Ion suck pretty badly for the following reasons:

1) Their resolution is far lower than what's needed to faithfully capture the image.
2) They offer you little to no control over the final result.
3) Their illumination is very spotty at best, requiring extensive manipulation and extensive Photoshop experience just to achieve results that resemble anywhere near photographic.
