Debian > Fedora?

I am not sure what OS I should load as my main desktop/server and would lov e to try Debian but have only ever used Fedora for 2 years. Do you guys recommend Debian over Fedora as a Server with many desktop/everyday graphical functionality?

Go for it. There is a reason debian is the most popular distribution. If you are unsure you can always try it's offspring ubuntu.
 
I have always wanted to give Debian a shot but they have a very complicated install process. I am going to give the "net install" a shot but have never done it and I am no sure how hard this is from a "noob" status. Any tips or advice?

I found this link that seems to be very helpful but I am not sure if this is the net install process or just a walk through of a CD based install?

As long as you understand linux concepts the debian installer works quite well.

LoL that link you posted is pretty much the debian installer. Simple, no bells and whistles, and not many "help" options. Sorta seat of the pants installation, but it works. It only assumes you know what you are doing.


Don't let the lack of a GUI scare you. this isnt windows or mandrake ;)
 
I am not scared by lack of GUI. I did eventually get Slackware 10.1 installed :eek: and that is the mother of text based installs for me but I only did it because I had a guide I was able to follow step by step.

That link above, is that the net install?
 
I am a fan of Slackware, but debian is also very popular, and I know the CS dept at the university I attend uses it almost strictly. Personally, I would say try it out, see how you like it.
 
I tried Slackware and it was not for me. I guess I like to have the latest and greatest once everything is installed but Slack seemed very dated and had no simple updater like Apt or Yum. I found Gnome to be very buggy but I did not give it much of a chance at all.
 
I learned a lot going from fedora to debian. Everything was easier, much cleaner and worked a lot better. Give it a shot. Also, just give the net install a try. It will only load the stuff you need then you can add whatever.

apt is a great tool!!

No it isn't. It's the fastest growing, but Redhat seems to be the winner with the "most popular", if we take popularity to mean installations. It'd be impossible to say for sure as getting an accurate count of installations is itself impossible.

However, between fedora and debian, I'd go with suse or slack. Fedora is buggy as hell, and debian is *old* ( if you use the stable tree ). If you use unstable or testing, you may get newer stuff, but it's buggy.

Slack is pretty current ( the base is ), and I can go get the latest packages if that's what I want. Suse is just plain awsome; Decent package management, easy installer, YaST and a good gui. I'm a little concerned about novelle owning them, but we'll see.
 
When I installed Slack...I had no idea how to run a system update like APT or YUM. I guess I am not that strong in Linux since Fedora has been "holding my hand" for 2 years.

I really would like to try Debian since I hear so many good things and maybe then move on to something like Slackware... :eek:
