ive been searching all day for a way to open and edit .dat files

any ideas and kicks in the right direction would be super!

muchos gracias

what's in the .dat file? is it a vcd file? Then you can just rename it to mpg if you want, it should work fine.

no its not a vcd, the data file is from a game i have.. i am assuming it contains game data...

i tried opening it in notepad but it's encrypted i think...

sorry, then it's game data, saved in whatever format the developer wanted. you can try maybe a hex editor or something...but I really don't know.

It could be *anything*.

Contact the game developer and ask for the file format then write a program that'll interpret it. Unless it's a format for a particular program- ie a 3d model that's gmax compatible or something like that- it's most likely in a propietary format.

If you can get the file format from the developer though, it's just grunt work to make a reader.

ok after doing my research....

the files i have remind me of a winRAR style by i have a file named data05.idx, then data05_000.dat, data05_001.dat and so on.

i am hoping by opening the idx file it will in turn have some type of file tree will all the games nfo... i am hoping its similar to quake and half-lifes .pak file.

so i did a little googling for idx and it came up with a lot of nfo about dbase. i dont have dbase, so the simple question is does anyone know any useful info about .idx files? will dbase open this mofo up?

this is so much fun :)
