Basically guys, the problem is this.

At the place I do volunteer work for, they want me to build the best machine I can out of old parts they have lying around. It will be used for Internet Use and basic Office stuff like Word, etc...

I have the choice of a Cyrix 333 processor for this computer, or a P2 266... which would be the best processor to go for?

This machine will be running 128MB SDRAM, a 4gb Hdd, Windows 98SE, and Office XP. I'm tempted to install Linux onto it, instead of Windows 98, and use mainly open-source software instead of going the Microsoft Route. If I did go the Linux route, this machine could then also be used to demonstrate to the students, other Operating Systems and free-ware/open-source software...

Which do you think would be the best processor to use?

Which do you think would be the best OS / Software to use?

I would go with linux in your case. Once you install windows wheres nothing left on that 4gb harddrive so you might be cuttung it tight with oxp.

Go with the Intel. Cyrix processors are always gimped, especially in the FPU section.

If you go the linux route, just make sure you'll be able to support it.

seconded on the support thing. Although even 98 will die after a few hours on the net. Maybe think about 2000 (even though it will be slow as hell).

Well the Linux thing is more just to demonstrate other OS'es. I've not had much experience with it, but it would be more of a "barely used except for demos" thing.

As for Win 2000, I would install it, but no license makes it difficult.

4gb hard drive is plenty big enough for Windows 98 and Office XP.

Go with the Pentium 2. The C333 is a socket 7 CPU with the L2 cache on the motherboard running at FSB speed...if the motherboard even has any. The PC's with a C333 were value PC's. The P2 cache will be on the backside bus and run at 1/2 the speed of the CPU if I remember correctly... bottom line is that the P2 will be the better platform overall.

And as far as OS's go, stick with 98. Modern Linux distro's need just as much of a machine as XP. Plus, even as cool as it sounds to be using Linux, the kids are going to be growing up in a world where Windows and Office are dominant. Let them learn on something that they will actually use in school.
