Hey everyone.

I have a 2.0ghz 2GB RAM Macbook and I have installed bootcamp (the newest one released 2 weeks ago) with the new drivers. I have WinXP Pro running just fine.

One problem I am having is when I try to run CS Source, I get a black screen instead of the menu. HL2 runs great, but it crashes on autosaves.

I just want to get CS:S working so I can play it. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

the macbook can play hl2? wow. I didn't even try. With the black screen does it come with any sounds from the menu? Is there the hl2.exe in the taskbar?

oh yeah, hl2.exe is running, I can hear the sounds (the clicking when you run the mouse over the "find servers" and "options" buttons).

that's probably it... let me go check on that.

Edit: how do I do that exactly?

Add -dxlevel 70 on the desktop icon of CS:S. This will make it run as dxlevel 7, you only need to start it up once with -dxlevel 70 because after that the game will save that setting. BTW, with 1.25gb ram CS:S ran at around 10fps with no one else in a server :(

I can't find the resolution change thing in the config file. I did the dx level 70 trick... didn't work.

Any more help at all?

you can also set it in the shortcut

"PATH\hl2.exe -width 1280 -height 800

or whatever you want the resolution to be... probably something significantly lower than that.

If that doesn't work, then nothing will. CS:S has to run at dxlevel 7 to play it on the Intel GMA 950. If you keep getting the black screen it is probably still at dxlevel 9. The black screen has nothing to do with the in game resolution because I had the same problem and the dxlevel trick is the only thing that worked! :)
Try -dxlevel 70 in the launch properties again and if not, keep searching google.

EDIT:
If you need help with the launch properties, scroll down to Half Life 2 Icon Properties to see how to add -dxlevel 70.

its not going to be very playable anyway...
Heh it isn't but it seems he still wants to see it "running" (mine ran at a BLISTERING 9-10fps :D )

I didn't think games would play well on a Macbook, even with 2GB of RAM. Only the MBP could handle games since it has an external video card. Correct?

I can run CS:S with pretty decent gameplay settings on a MBP. And since the game is coded for ATI cards, the MBP runs it really well.

Yeah, HL2 and CSS run awesome on the MBP. I can play HL2DM at max settings with no AA at native res. I could probably push AA up without much of a hit, but I haven't had much time to mess with settings, since I just started classes this week. Also, I have the MBP with 128MB of VRAM. If you have the 256MB model, you're looking at even better performance.

i can run Wow pretty nicely, or atleast to my standard of acceptance. on my 2.0ghz 1.25g btw

Perhaps if you searched for help on running CS:S with a GMA950 you might get more feedback. Source on a GMA950... good luck! :p

How hot do your MBP's get when HL2ing? Mine just about burns up.

That's normal. Mine does the same thing, but since you wouldn't really be playing HL2 on your lap, it doesn't make much difference.

We have 2 of the 1.83MBP at work with the ATI 1600 w/256 and I installed bootcamp and added windows to one machine (I had the machine for a week) and it ran HL2 with out a hitch. I had the setting cranked out at a good clip, and I was getting around 40fps.

"bootcamp" Apple has produced a system that lets you run Windows on your MACBook / computers now, this will be integrated with Leopard.

why the hell does everyone think that MAC is an acronym for something....MACbooks, MACintosh, iMAC......
its driving me nuts.

You intel guys should try this new program CrossOver, it allows x86 programs to be installed and run right in OS X

It's not at a point where it can run Source games properly yet. It does the original Half-Life (through Steam) just fine though.

What's up with all the mac !!! being so irritated by people calling an apple computer a MAC?

Capitalization is not inherently linked to acronyms, you know. MACbook is a correct spelling. It is incorrect capitalization, if anything.

If you plan to criticize someone, at least make sure you're not make-ing a criticol eror. ;)

i have yet to see an emulation program be able to run Source at an acceptable rate.

Beause it looks like shit. Oh, right, I mean S.H.I.T.

Technically, CrossOver is not emulation.

Parallels is also promising native GPU support. I'm actually OK with Boot Camp for intensive stuff since it allows Windows to address the whole 2 gigs, but I would definitely like better USB support in Parallels.

How isn't it emulation? While it is meant to be seamless with OSX, it is still emulating the Windows operating system to run the programs (emulation has to do with more than hardware). In any case, that doesn't really invalidate my point.

It's not emulation. It's a Windows API implementaion. Crossover isn't new by the way. It's been around for ages, but has just been ported to OSX.

Despite what the name inherently states, WINE is still 'emulating' the Windows API in order for it to run software written for Windows. While this may not be what the term 'emulation' is typically pointing to, it is still emulation. (k, this is gonna make the topic extremely off topic, so let's agree to disagree?)

I think what he was trying to say is that Crossover is new for apple users.

Crossover still won't run applications as well as boot camp would. Crossover is based off of WINE. WINE states that their focus is not performance but rather getting more things to run. WINE is an incomplete implementation of the Windows API, and as such, certain programs will not run as well or will fail to run. I'd have to say bootcamp is the best bet for gaming.
