Crimson Desert

I purchased the game but havent ran it yet. I only got it to test hardware honestly. But anyway, very scummy of them not wanting to try and work with Intel for getting their GPU's to work on it.

I think the more the merrier when it comes to options for us consumers to purchase hardware. Especially now Nvidia and to a lesser degree AMD and Intel are not interested in us gamers but only interested in AI.

I'm 8 hours in now and am hooked. It has issues but there's a lot to love imo. The controls are still very confusing. I am still being bombarded by new systems. And the combat hasn't totally clicked with me; to me it feels like the parry wind-up or cooldown is too high. I fought the 1st major boss (Hornsplitter) a little while ago; he wasn't too hard but some of his combos are really quick and if I mistimed the first part of the combo I wouldn't be able to parry any of the followup strikes. I'm using his sword now though and just realized that I could upgrade the damage at the smithy. I was playing this like normal RPGs where I never spend my money but I ended up upgrading my weapon to like +5 and bought a full suit of plate armor for the aura. The enclosed helm even adds a bit of reverb to the main character's voice in cutscenes. The graphics are amazing at times; but often times something feels off about them. I'm enjoying the main story so far; it's not amazing stuff but
you're rewarded with an 'all expenses paid' camp as a reward for your previous quests an for whatever reason it hit harder than most games. I loved the glazing they gave me for my deeds.
Quite a few side quests have been enjoyable; but just as many were forgettable.

It has problems but I'm having 8/10 fun on it. Hopefully the devs get the support they need to continue working on it. But honestly, this game would be a 10/10 if the Yakuza writers/devs were involved.

These aren't at the highest settings; the Ray Regeneration options adds a lot of artifacts on Linux and isn't even available to use on Windows 11 (RDNA3).

This game has been more controversial than I thought it would be. I'm definately waiting now, as much of this game is not really my thing. Game looks great overall but the controls/UI seem unfun to learn.

This is not a good look though:

Be interesting to see things in a week or two.

Two completely different game types.Marathon also had a beta where like 60% of the player base quit playing over a couple days so they self-selected their player base for the actual release.

Something very odd with ray reconstruction... It flattens the ground geometry. Like literally, the extrusions in the ground sink by an inch or two. If you click on these images it should open an image viewer where you can swap back and forth between them and see what I mean.

Very noticeable when side by side. Does it make it look bad when playing or is it just different but fine?

Out in the wild you have a lot of grass covering the ground so it's not as noticeable. Definitely noticeable on the cobblestone road that I posted though. I'm currently playing with ray reconstruction off since I prefer a higher frame rate and less latency.

Exploring controls kinda feels like GTA3/VC/SA and combat controls kinda feels like Dark Souls but DS lock on is better. The scenery with that draw distance is amazing especially right at the beginning with the horse ride over the bridge, wow. One thing I absolutely fucking hate is that keys get auto used on locked doors and there's no way really to see what doors are locked and what ones aren't. That shit needs to ask you if you want to use it since keys are a consumable item. Also keys have open misspelled in the item description. I probably spent an hour reloading shit due to the automatic unlocking and consuming of keys and it doesn't load your save games that quickly and I'm getting sick of that unskippable animation. So far it seems like there's a lot to like and a lot to dislike. I do like it but it's not zOMG.

Apparently this game is using some AI artwork which may be against the Steam store policy if they did not disclose it beforehand. Not my photo:

Looks like those horses have some extra legs. I know random paintings are not that important, but still lame to see.

The Hardware Unboxed Aussies noticed that and said they notified the developers. It's not actual geometry, which might be why, it is displacement mapping which is a texture effect that gives the appearance of depth (quite convincingly usually) and maybe Ray Reconstruction is confused over what it is supposed to do with it.

So far I'm still loving it, between the world detail, exploration and combat, I can see myself dumping hundreds of hours into this.
I find the combat to be a mix of Dark Souls and the Arkham games. If you button mash you will get your ass handed to you.

even has a little wwe action in there, that stunner would make stone cold proud!(0:21)

turn off blur, dof and the other cinematic crap.

Sharpness is also a big problem. It does the same thing as Nioh 3 where it defaults sharpness (or at least DLSS sharpness) to 100% by default, so everything looks deep fried. Except here there's no option to turn it down so you gotta do hacky things like download OptiScaler to override it.

Yeah, Ive read the cinematic mode is more for screenshots or video clips for looks and hurts performance. People really need to learn that blur is often best turned off. Smart devs have started leaving blur off by default. That steam forum post from above is a warning for me, mount and blade type controls by default just turn me off. Spending an hour or more tweaking controls tends to annoy me.

I’m susceptible to stutter of any kind… frame-time issues will actually cause me to stop playing a game, even if I like it… so it’s a pleasant surprise to discover that this game, at 4K max settings, runs without a hitch. (5090/7800x3D)

Day one… you rarely see a game running this well.

Also, enable ray reconstruction, if you can. I spent the first 30 minutes not realizing it wasn’t turned on. When I enabled ray reconstruction, the result was transformative, like playing the re-mastered version.

I hope the game itself is fun. I like the way the character moves… not floaty, but weighty. If you hated Red Dead 2 because the character was ‘slow’, then you’ll probably hate this too. Personally, I like it when developers make decisions like this.

The devs commented on the controls in their discord this morning.

Since launch, we have been listening closely to your feedback and doing our best to make improvements to the game. In particular, we are aware of the discomfort many players have experienced with the controls, and we are currently preparing a patch to address this. We also want to apologize for not providing keyboard and mouse players with a satisfactory gameplay experience.

I mean realistically it's likely just placeholder shit that never got replaced

Somehow I doubt some artist legitimately saw that horse abomination after generating it and was like "looks great, my work here is done, ship it"

Boss fights aren't really rewarding because you basically have infinite heals by eating everything in your inventory. I gulped down 1000 raw steaks during the reed devil fight which made it trivial. They should've implemented a blood sugar mechanism where you die if you eat too much.

Imagine Elden Ring if you had infinite healing flasks during boss battles. That's basically what this is.
