Crimson Desert

That is part of the problem with longer games. Inherently the tutorials or starting sections can take many hours. If your game is 80 hours, you can easily be in the tutorial phase for 3-7 hours. I know not all long games are like this, I am just saying it is inherently harder. Especially from a story standpoint.

Exactly. It might take that long to realize the game isn’t for you, at which point it’s too late.

That was my only point with that post, and fwiw it took me probably 30 (very frustrating) hours to get into Elden Ring, which ended up being among my favorite gaming experiences of all time and turned into nearly 800 hours of play time. I highly doubt this could reach that level for me but who knows?

I’m just saying a quick romp probably isn’t going to give you enough of an idea, particularly with the wonky control complaints which is the main issue giving me pause.

some games take awhile to get good...Red Redemption 2 being one of the best examples...Dark Souls 1 I really didn't fully appreciate until over 50% into the game...early From Software games might not be the best example as there is a lot to understand and they do a poor job of explaining all the mechanics
There's a difference between a game taking a while to pick up pace and knowing if you like it enough to play it for that long.

True, but even a tutorial should be fun. Satisfactory is a good example: I had tried Factorio back in the day and it didn't grab me. However I saw this and for some reason it was speaking to me so I decided to try it. If it didn't click, I was going to refund it. It, of course, starts with a tutorial, any game that complex has to, and I wasn't but 10 minutes in and I was hooked and enjoying that tutorial. While I would say the game got more fun after I was done and things got more complex, I still liked my time in the tutorial. I would say that if you play the game and find the tutorial boring, probably the rest will be too because while there is more to do, more complexity, etc fundamentally it is the same gameplay loop and presentation so if you don't like it, then I don't see that changing.

Now I'm not saying there haven't been some games with fucking terrible tutorials that are no fun to get through... but I'd argue fuck those games, go spend your time on something fun. Life is short, and you only get part of it to do the things you want. Spend that on what is fun for you. Don't slog through something to "get to the good part."

It needs 195GB for installation and takes up 125GB once installed.
I did a chkdsk /f /r on it and it didn't detect bad sectors but apparently hidden files it removed. So let's see if it will work now. It was a completely formatted empty 256gb drive.

I'm thinking about refunding. Something about the way it looks it very off-putting. Only about an hour in but for some reason it doesn't have that wow I want to play this feeling.

Anyone else who got this game via AMD reward not get the pre-order bonus?

looking to discredit others who may not grade the game as high
I have zero problems if I see people discrediting the "official reviewers" who try to boost games like Concord, Highguard, DA: Veilguard with high scores. Or bash games like Stellar Blade with low scores. There's literally Stellar Blade reviews bashing the game from these "reviewers" and the summary of the review is "I hate and I am jealous of pretty women".

Yeah fuck off with that. There's a reason the youtubers who don't work for these publications have been blowing up over the past decade repeatedly pulling hundreds of thousands of views with their unofficial actual player reviews. Many people have rightfully lost trust with the previous status quo.

(That said you are 100% right that there are those who are cherry picking reviews based on their own biases, but that happens with every single title anyway)

Honestly, the people who gave Space Marine II a 6 but Vileguard an 8 tell me this game is a 6.

Best advertising a guy could ask for.

I only got about an hour or 2 of playtime but my impressions so far:

- Definitely feeling some of those MMO mechanics: chop wood, fish, mine, etc.
- Character movement feels a bit clunky which makes it hard to aim at things you want to pick up.
- Graphics are amazing and the landscape designs make me feel like I'm in another world.
- Narrative and story hasn't drawn me in so far. The MC sounds bored and mundane to me.

I think the graphics and environment will keep me playing but the story has been bland so far. The MC doesn't seem like he's reacting much to anything going on around him but that could just be the voice acting.

Is it like RDR2 where they were more concerned about the animation being smooth than the control being responsive?

I didn't play much of RDR2 but the movement did remind me of that. Feels like a bit of lag.

You have to press a button to run otherwise he slow moves. RDR

It's not just the movement speed. When I do things like try to turn him around or dodge roll, it feels like it's happening half a second later. I'm also getting ~95-100fps on DLSS performance.

Edit: I'm not the only one experiencing this issue. Just found a few reddit threads on it.

I'd say it's somewhere in between but you're also affected by the surrounding terrain more in this game than most making things feel more grounded.

While I've gotten used to the controls, picking things up can still sometimes be a pain so I generally just hold down the look/focus button while doing so. It makes it a lot easier.

the impressions I got last week when i heard about this game were that it looks good. seems well made, and seems boring / not for me.

something about the combat just... i dont know. those were my impressions from the steam store videos.

but the internet seemed to think this was going to be the best thing ever. Now I see a 60 something % positive on steam.

seems like reviews are pretty consistent...currently 68% on Steam and 78% on MetaCritic

I think in totality this is fair. 75 is about where I'm at.

These devs clearly care about this project and I won't be surprised if a year from now they bring it to an 8. The problem is (as always): It's much easier to work on something before it's released vs after but then again they are coming from an MMO background and that's how this all goes. I certainly am wishing them the best on this.

I don't like MMOs so I guess it's good that I like this. I don't love it, at least not yet. I haven't had the eureka moment yet and I don't know if that's coming or not. I'm enjoying something different and I like what it's bringing to the table.

the game sounds very optimized which is something you rarely see nowadays from big AAA games...the industry's reliance on Unreal Engine is hurting games...more developers need to use something other than UE

I agree everything is almost cool but off putting somehow.

The into is pointless you talk to some people then everyone dies and I could care less because no one has any backround. Also why does my guy act like he dies and comes back to life everyday? He doesn't even act or say anything when he dies and comes back.

Combat feels like it's balanced for an mmo and janky and just mash attack till dead

Controls for k/m is bad but not horrible

The graphics are mixed...some parts looks amazing but it's has this odd look to it like it's hazy or everything is way over sharpened and off putting for some reason.

Idk does it get better and worth playing? Just feels off putting coverall for some reason

It'll probably end up being a 6/10 or 7/10 to me. At least the game mechanics seem to be deep and thought out but yea single player MMO kind of best describes it. I wish it felt more fluid like Where Winds Meet.

Or they should learn how to optimize UE as best they can, versus what UE is known for (checkbox culture). Need a feature, tick the check box.

Kinda related, I enjoy watching things like this:

I’ve always believed that the score is awarded by the specific reviewer, not by whatever website that reviewer is writing for.

I heard its a slog for the first while of the game. I haven't started it yet.

Not sure what you mean by over partitioning?

So it is fine now I guess. I did notice that when installing the games it eats up more space than normal, but then goes back down to what is actually used vs showing.

Because they have a good amount of compute, and I supported much weaker 1060,
I doubt it has anything to do with intel arc gpu not being strong enough and fallback for latest and greatest tech seem to be there and working (run on a 1060 3gb has you say), issue could be partial support, game see workgraph and others being there and try to use it, crash on intel too often and would need to change the code looking at actual gpu with a pre-made support list instead of the dynamic way of looking at what the GPU tell you it is able to do, effort not made because of how low intel market share could be in Korea that they did not even thought of it has being an issue (for them just an intel iGPU will not work, but pre panther lake did not even thought about running this on them anyway).

Intel just released new laptop CPUs with a dramatically better ARC GPU in them. Along with an updated XESS model.
I wouldn't be surprised if they could do 1080p/60 high in this game. or 1440p with XESS quality mode.

IMO, Crimson Desert is gonna need to support Intel.

Yea, I'm guessing some sort of things that weren't working right, and maybe intel was working with them/some driver issues. It looks like theres been some performance issues with newer drivers and BDO, so could be something intel is doing their engine just doesn't like, particularly around skill effects ( I may give this a test tonight since I have a B580 and kind of interested in seeing what it performs like).

Seems like something they can patch it in later when they feel like it.

Ooor maybe they just don't want to do it for whatever reason (Article update)

"We’re aware that Crimson Desert currently doesn’t launch on systems with Intel GPUs and we’re hugely disappointed that players using Intel graphics hardware can’t jump into the world of Pywel at launch.

Getting games running smoothly is always a partnership between developers and hardware makers. Over the past several years, we’ve reached out to Pearl Abyss many times to help test, validate, and optimize support for Intel graphics, providing early hardware, drivers, and engineering resources across multiple generations, including Alchemist, Battlemage, Meteor Lake, and Lunar Lake.

Our teams are deeply committed to helping all studios deliver the best experience possible, providing open tools, documentation, and direct engineering support to make sure their games run well for everyone, including the tens of millions of players using Intel GPUs. We remain ready to assist Pearl Abyss however we can.

For details on the choice not to enable Intel support at launch, please reach out directly to Pearl Abyss."
