Man, information on these things are pretty scarce. So far I can only buy a Dell E1705 or an Acer Travelmate 4202WLMI or Acer Asprie 5672WLMI. The acers can be found on Compusa site, and not too terible prices either 1199 for the 5672 and 1599 for the 4202 which is LOADED. Only problem...everyone of these models are HUGE...15.4 inch screens. I want a core duo thats around 14", 100GB, 1GB Ram DVD writer..for around $1100-1200. Anyone see other models (besides the mac)?
 
hp makes one.. but it's 15.4 wxga..and shitty graphics... owell just throwing ideas out there

Integrated graphics are just fine. It all depends on what you are doing. I have a friend that has the generation down from the Intel 950, he has the Intel 900 and plays Quake III arena, Counter Strike and a few other games. But he mainly uses it for photoshop, internet, email, ms word, illustrator, burning dvds, watching dvds and stuff like that. So in his case onboard video doesn’t make a difference at all.

BTW forcemac101 you could get the Compaq V2000T that has everything you want for $1300. Only difference is 512mb vs. 1024mb and 80gb vs. 100gb. If that is okay with you then go get it!

I have a Compaq V2000 and love it! My buddy with the Intel 900 has an Acer.
 
you aren't going to like integrated graphics if you want to play any hd content. there isn't much now, but there will be soon.

wishes the laptop i got 3.5 years ago would have had any sort of integrated gfx. had to get a new one just to play nicely encoded movies / shows

Yeah, saw they just went up for sale yesterday...but its a little pricy I think compared to that acer
 
I saw one of the acer units at Compusa while I was looking for my replacement laptop. The more costly one was loaded but wasn't really that expensive if you look at the specs. Build quality seemed nice from what I could tell, but I need my 17" screen so it was a no go for me but very tempting.
 
I really want the DV1000T. The HP dv1000 series is very nice. Nice looks, good keyboard layout, nice touchpad, excellent screen if you get the upgrade. I'm probably going to get one if my tax return is somewhat sizeable.
 
I think I will also go for the DV100T, for about the same price as the VT2000 you can get the integrated webcam...the only crummy thing is the video card...something better than an integrated solution would be nice...

I think I will be waiting until this at least start shipping which is the end of feb..

It doesn't have a very nice screen, but the 12-cell battery is kinda nice... the price is pretty good. Just wish it had a nicer screen.

If someone has this laptop they should write a review on it... cause the screen at this point is kind of making me look elsewhere.

The weight isn't great, but 5.2lb isn't that bad. Just wish it was UXGA or something. It's not XBrite, or whatever HP calls it, which is kind of sad.

Anyways, this laptop does look nice, the screen takes away from it though.

Screen is res isn't that bad actually 1280x768 for 14" is pretty fine pitch, also the HP screens do have the Xbrite type of screen. Go take a look at bestbuy as they have regular centrino DV1000s out there....

I suppose you could go for the higher res but at 14" it might be a bit of overkill to go to the next size (1440x900 somethign?)

I had a Acer 4202 (1.66ghz dual core) for a couple of days with the intergrated gma 950, played 720p and 1080p files, in microsoft's format, and quicktime, without skipping a beat.

I ordered one yesterday with 1.6 duo core 1 gb dual channel memory 60 gb sata 8x dual layer 7800go and 1 year in home warranty for $1345 after tax and handling. I searched and found a $500 off cupon .

I think that the Sony SZ is a very strong competitor, I'm very very very close to buying one... I'm just waiting to see if I can get a sweet deal on one... If I do buy it I'll post a very large review on it... pics, benchmarks, as well as how it works with Linux... real world battery-life tests and the works...

I can't wait!

I would look forward to your review because this sony laptop looks to have some killer specs. The price is pretty damn high though, hope you are able to get your sweet deal.

really good specs.

a bit pricey, but not tooooo bad. especially considering the 15 inch sxga screen. those are hard to find nowadays, some of us, don't want a widescreen.

edit* that price is canadian. but, they ship to the US as well, for american customers, the price is roughly $2,050 without shipping insurance. that's a pretty dang good deal.

I almost suggested this notebook, until I saw the OP's budget. I am thinking about getting one and I looked at one at Best Buy today. It was $1.9K but it sure was cool. Carbon fiber case and the dual graphics systems. It is perfect for me because it will fit into my briefcase and I can still play games. Also, I won't have to worry about carrying a charger to class.

I checked their website, don't see it there, but at the store! You saw it for 1.9K? The carbon version? Cause if so I'm getting in my car to buy it now.
 
Yeah I know how you feel, but I'm stuck between two extremes... the SZ and the Dell 9400...

I just want something inbetween.
The SZ's price is a bit high and the Dell price is good, but size is huge

Don't know what to do... if I had all the $$$ I would get the new Acer TravelMate 8200, but I don't want to spend $2,500-ish...
So between the Dell and SZ it is... it's like an ultimate showdown of my laptop destiny.
