Connection issues

current config is
dsl---->Dsl modem/built in router----->Belkin Wireless G router----->computer

but when i go (start, cmd, ipconfig) it shows up as the dsl modem with the dsl modems ip address

The reality of your situation is simple, you are in over your head. But because I want to help I will give you the low down.

*Your modem/router is handing out your ips and dns address as it should. You simply connected your new router and expected magic.

*If you still have a connection up, which it sounds like you do. You need to log into your modem/router and make it a bridge connection
to your new router. Make sure your new router is the top dog handing out ips and your dns.

Hence get a buddy that nows there stuff to help.

Or you can do a router behind a router, but that would complicates things more and depending upon your skill level, might be a nightmare.

Here's what I mean

(WAN)DSL+Router(LAN)--->Assigns 192.168.1.10 to (WAN Side)Router(LAN Side)---->PC gets 10.0.0.10

The easiest way is to either do what the other poster said or convert your wireless router into a wireless bridge; bridge the 10/100BaseT to wireless port...this way you get the IP address from the DSL+Router's DHCP server.
