Ive been trying to get a system working for a friend of mine.
what happens is i begin installing windows XP (he even had a legit version :eek: ), install the SATA drivers from the floppy that came with the motherboard during the intial file loading phase (blue background, gray line on the bottom). Once the files are loaded and it says "starting windows installation" orsomething like that, the computer restarts. Sometimes it will go to the next screen for a moment before restarting.
The hardware is:
maxtor 160 gig SATA hdd
512MB mushkin pc3200 RAM
soltek SL K8av2 RL motherboard
athlon 64 2800+ cpu
powercolor radeon 9800pro

I called MS tech support and the guy was stupmed. Any ideas? This has really been bugging me! Right now im trying to install to an IDE hard drive rather than SATA, so ill come back with how that works (i think i tried it already and failed, but going again for assurance)

update:
same things happens on the IDE hard drive, as well as with windows 2000 rather than XP. The CD rom drive makes a funny noise, then stops spinning the disk just before the crash, so im going to try another drive. Right now im running a NU Technology DVD RW drive.
 
Try bumping the voltage for the ram to 2.7 or 2.8

Sometimes that mushkin ram likes more voltage.

Other then a different cd-drive, i dunno what to think.
 
if more voltage doesnt work try diff ram or a diff power supply. who knows.. maybe its not giving a stable enough current to the cpu random reboots usualy means theres a cpu problem (usualy overclocking error) tho.. arctic silver it up and make sure the cooling solution is up to par
 
Yeah, sounds like a PSU or CD-Rom problem. I would try a second CD-rom if one is handy.. that could be causing the problem.

I've had a similar problem with a friends computer.. her DVD rom was doing the same thing. Not to say that's it for sure, but it's a possibility.
 
update:
switching powersupply and CDROM drive did nothing.

I'd strip this system down to just the mainboard, CPU and RAM, with only the videocard and FDD connected, then run some tests, like Memtest86+. Then, if that works, hook up a HDD (PATA), and run the manufacturer's drive fitness test. This will stress the drive and the system's associated subsystems, and should cause the same problems as when installing an OS, if the problem is with any of those components.

Don't forget to play around with the BIOS (reset the CMOS first!) while troubleshooting, like disabling onboard devices (e.g. SATA).
 
last time i had a this problem it was a bad mobo, is this a new setup, if so try and swap the mobo
