Computer Slowing Down??? HELP ME!

First of all, I'm going to give my comp specs:

P4 2.8GHz 533 Bus
ASUS P4T533-C MOBO
1024 MB (4x256) PC800 NON-ECC RDRAM
Seagate 80GB 7200RPM HDD
52x24x52x CD-RW
16X DVD-ROM
480W DEMON PSU
Sennheiser PC155 USB Headset
Radeon 9800 Pro 128MB
Windows XP Professional

Now, let me get into the details. I have had this same setup for more than 6 months. During this time, I have never had problems with the speed of my computer, and have always been happy. However, about 2-3 weeks ago, I noticed an EXTREME sudden slowdown with my computer. Thinking it was, perhaps, a virus or two, I ran my anti-virus. I found a few viruses, and thought that this was my problem. No! As soon as I booted my computer back up, I saw that it was still running the same. After defragmenting, running spyware removers, and other things, I finally resorted to reformatting.

After going throught with the format I installed every single WindowsXP Service Pack 1/updates availible. I then installed DirectX, my video drivers, and rebooted. After installing some misc. software and games, etc., I ran the ultimate test. I ran some games!

First, I ran Counter-Strike. If you don't know, this game is now running on 6 years old. While I can usually get 100 FPS (the max) in game, whenever I get a pop-up or need to alt+tab, I find that when I re-enter the game it is extremely choppy (freezing every few seconds for a good half-second). This has NEVER happened before the last few weeks, and it's EXTREMELY frustrating. I then installed some older ATI drivers, and the same results occured.

So basically, even after a REFORMAT the computer acts exactly the same. Sadly enough, I cannot run KaZaA effeciently without my whole computer continuously lagging. Whenever I try to run Windows Media Player with ANYTHING open (downloads, internet explorer, games, etc.) it skips quite frequently.

I think that this is a problem with my processor because it is always running a high percentage of it's usage, but it really could be anything LEADING to the processors problems. Please help me to let me know what is going on here!

Thanks a lot,
Kevin

Hmm, sounds like a hardware problem. However, how much HD space have you got left? It sounds like as if you don't have enough free space for efficient disk swapping

Whats your temps?

If summers there at last are you slowing down due to overheating.
Just one idea.

Also I would run Memtest.
Then bench your system useing something like Soft Sandra.
That way you may find whats running slow.

Luck........ :D

-Format again, you may have got a bad installation by luck that time.
-Don't use Kazaa, it causes more headaches than anything else. It's slow anyways. Learn how to use a real file sharing program, like MIRC, or DC++.
-Temps?

System Idle Process, man that is a power hungry program, and I can't close it either!!! :D

What it kind of sounds like, is that you had spyware, reinstalled, reinstalled your old programs, and got the spyware all over again.

For spyware, personally i like "Hijack This" It will kill things ad-aware and spybot wont. So its nice to use in conjunction with them.

The problem also could be with your ram.. its pc800, not a good level of ram.. Might want to invest in a 512mb stick of pc3200 or something

PC800 is RDRAM...NOT...DDR SDRAM....PC3200 is DDR SDRAM and therefor wouldn't be compatible :p

Hey guys, sorry for not responding sooner. dig_em, Will is right, I have RDRAM.

Mojo - I did reformat twice, problems both times. As for Kazaa, I use it for smaller files. It's easier to use :)

vanquished - I have plenty of room left on my hard drive, so I think that this is fine.

Tiger - I was unaware that temperatures could affect my computer this drastically? My computer has always had a problem with high heat, could this be the problem that my whole computer is acting slow?

Thanks for the help guys, I really appreciate it.

Kevin

Yeah for sure it does. Buy a nice new zalman CNPS7000 copper HSF. Very quiet, and it'll keep the CPU cool. Also some Arctic Silver 3 or 5 thermal compound to apply to the top of the CPU before you place the new HSF on it.

Is your case cool? If not try and buy some fans for it. Usually 80mm is compatible, sometimes 120mm. Some cases don't take extra fans, so you'll have to do a bit of research.

noobie in the house! :p

don't ever use kazaa. Everything that you download from it can contain spyware, adware, viruses or even all of them together. If you really want to use a file sharing program then use bit torrent. Apart from that, i don't really know what's happenening. Could it be that your motherboard is dying? southbridge overheating? check if you have a heatsink on the south/northbridge
