Specs :

-Athlon xp 2000+ (1.67ghz)
-Allied 400 watts PSU
-Kingston 512 DDR RAM
-Leadtek Geforce 4 Ti 4400
-WD 80 GB HD / 8 mb cache
-windows xp
-Leadtek motherboard (nforce2 w/ onboard audio)

other:

-nothing oc'ed
-no spyware detected (ran both adaware and spybot)

I built this system about a year ago and it ran pretty solid until a few weeks ago when it began restarting randomly also random loss of sound (restarting usually gets sound back but still very annoying). I could be listening to songs, playing games, or even simple browsing and it resets or shuts off the sound for no apparent reason. I checked temps because I thought it may be overheating but I dont believe thats the case because temps dont go over 60C. I dont believe its got anything to do with the electricity because I have two computers and the other one runs fine.

some situations/solutions I have considered:

1. reapply arctic silver
2. purchase a new motherboard
3. reformat hard drive
4. run virus scan (this is a bit difficult due to random resets)
5. reposition hard drive so it is horizontal in relation to the floor (i have a PC60 and use the very bottom hard drive racks which positions it vertically)

well I'd really appreciate it if someone could help me find out the cause/fix for this problem

Two most common causes of computer problems/restarts: faulty memory or failing PSUs.

Test the RAM with memtest86 first and and see if it generates any errors.

Ok thankfully I dont think its a hardware problem after all.
The error was with a driver for the motherboard. Anyway long story short I'm now trying to get the darn thing reformatted followed by a clean install of win xp. Having some problems getting the thing to reformat. I left the XP cd in the tray and rebooted (comp is set to read CD rom drive first when it boots up), then it takes me to a message 'Press any key to read cd'...blah blah, immediately takes me to the windows xp loading screen instead of the installation menu and then to my desktop WTF?

I also tried opening the cd thru 'MY computer' but this method also proved to be inaffective.

Get the temp down while ya are going through all this work..60c aint running cool.....

Yeah 60°C is kind of on the warm side (and that is if your diode is reporting right)
