am having a problem.

usualy when you type ping it will ping, right?
ex.

c:\> ping www.pcstats.com

for some reason when i type the above it says ping is not reconginzed bat blah blah blah

but when im in system32 it will work fine.
ex.

c:\windows\system32\> ping www.pcstats.com

What can I do to fix this?
also when i got to system properties > advanced > environment variables > and check path c:\windows\system32 is there

most likey your path is set wrong.

in command prompt type "path"

you should see similar:

Path=c:\;c:\windows;c:\windows\system32.

you ca set the path by typing "set path=<paths>"

also when i got to system properties > advanced > environment variables > and check path c:\windows\system32 is there

%systemroot% appears in that environment variable list as the system variable "windir". On an XP machine this is usually C:\Windows.

your paths are incorrect but if it works one way just let it work or tell the computer what you want by extenseve dos

ok i took all the current paths i had set and did set path="c:\windows\system32;c:\windows;c:\windows\System32\Wbem;C:\Program Files\American Express\BLUE"

and its still not working...

Which version of windows are you running?

If you are in 2k or XP, i believe that if you are doing that in a command shell that is the scope that it will keep. (it will be gone after you exit that instance of the shell)

in short, you must do in the advanced tab in the system properties control panel.

check it there.

ive done it in the advanced tab. Also i put it in autoexec.bat (someone mentioned that in another forum). The only way i can get it to work is if i set the path everytime i log into windows.

Check your autoexec.nt file. There may be a screwy path statement in it. Autoexec.nt is the boot file for WinNT systems, not autoexec.bat.

again, what OS are you running?

if it is any derivitive of NT then it is the "autoexec.nt" file.

and if it isn't holding your setting, you have other problems that are causing this.

try a repair on the windows installaiton.
