Clint Mansell, composer of such classic motion picture scores as 'The Fountain' and 'Requiem For a Dream' dropped the news that he is writing the musical score for the last chapter in BioWare's epic Mass Effect trilogy in an interview with The Quietus about his latest film, 'Black Swan'.

The website Badass Digest picked up on the news of Mansell's involvement in Mass Effect 3, which saw the composer asked about whether he does much work for other outlets like computer games. Mansell responded by saying: "I'm doing a video game this year actually. Mass Effect 3".

When describing what it's like to score a video game, Mansell said: "As I was saying about Public Enemy and re-working old hip-hop tunes for Requiem, and kind of re-working old ballet tunes for Black Swan, with something like Mass Effect you're more like a DJ, with all these elements. You've got the holding pattern, then the big explosion where you need the score to kick in. Then you need to take it off on a tangent. You've got all these different elements that change depending on what the player does. You have to figure out an overall symphony, but be able to break it down into component parts. You can bring the pain when required".

This is incredible news as Mansell is regarded by many as one of the most gifted composers working in the film industry today. His music is famous for being as epic as it is haunting. His involvement in Mass Effect 3 gives us good reason to believe we might be in for the most emotionally devastating game in BioWare's space opera franchise yet.

This guy is my favorite composer, he did the famous Requiem for a Dream score, and most recently Black Swan and Moon. Man, this game just got even better :)

Who is Clint and what song might you know?

Lux Aeterna here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hKLpJtvzlEI. Its a shame its over used for movie trailers like Lord of the Rings and 1000 others but this song made him in my eyes. Some of this best work is in The Fountain and Moon.

That's pretty great news. While Clint Mansell doesn't have the "epicness" of some other composers, his music is so grounded in the moment and always feel so relevant, it should be a joy to play ME3 with it.

I liked Jack Wall's pieces though for ME 1 and 2. Not saying this is necessarily a bad thing though.

What what? No fucking way. The Fountain soundtrack is one of the most beautiful pieces of recorded music I've ever heard. I honestly don't see how he could fit with ME3.

But I'm interested in seeing what he does.

Fantastic news.

Oh, and I agree, Lux Aeterna is a masterpiece. I could listen to it for hours and not get tired of it.

My guess? Some kind of emotional ending to the series, rounding it out as a true opera. God I wish I almost didn't know Clint was in, because now I"m expecting WAY too much from the end of the game.

He also scored Dead Reckoning from Smokin' Aces, and despite the movie simply being an action whore of a flick the ending scene was pretty powerful, or rather .. contrasting to the movie as a whole. Since Clint is only doing the end of ME3, perhaps it could turn out something like Smokin' Aces, which was an action flick through and through.. until the end.

Goddamn chills up my spin, I wasn't expecting it at all.

Mansell music would have easily fit in the final moments of ME2... so if ME3 takes a turn for the more serious, I don't see why not.

This is pretty cool I guess, but honestly I'm miffed. I hope Jack Wall still gets to work on ME3, because I saw absolutely nothing wrong with the soundtracks in ME and ME2.

After hearing Daft Punk's Tron soundtrack I almost positive they would have been perfect to do a ME3 soundtrack.

This is fantastic to hear (literally :p)! I loved ME1 and 2, and I look forward to this game.

That's pretty damn cool. Mass Effect 3 is going to be epic. Some of Clint's work is outstanding, loved the atmosphere he set with the ambient music in the film 'Moon', with Sam Rockwell.

Lux Aeterna is now ubiquitous and actually my least favourite due to overplay on Sky Sports News everytime they have a break (well it was the last time I watched SSN)

That would be something. As it stands, I wouldn't be surprised if we see them try out a videogame before too long.

This is good news. I hope Wall is still involved as well, since I really though the brought a certain signature feel to the first two games that needs to be there in 3 for some continuity and cohesion.

I was JUST thinking the exact same thing. Daft Punk MADE the atmosphere of Tron with their music.

Clint is so talented , from the old days of "Pop will eat its-self" to The Fountain (my personal favorite of his) I can't wait to hear what he scores for the game.

However I gotta add I love the current music in the ME series so I hope its not radically different.

I love his work. Can't wait to hear what he composes for a hopefully great game.

His audio work on Moon was outstanding I thought (great movie if you haven't seen it).

I think this can only end well for ME3 with him onboard.

No one beats Thomas Bergersen, in terms of epicness! :)

As long as they keep the Galaxy Map music the same, I'll be happy. :p

I'm interested to see how well Clint can pull this off.

Umm ..no... not even close.

For Mass Effect? I think so.

We'll see though, I liked Jack Wall's style...seemed to fit into the Mass Effect universe very well. Then again this is all a matter of personal taste, at least it isn't Lady Gaga or BieberBoy.

My favorite is Hans Zimmer. Black Hawk Down, Gladiator, COD4, MW2... great, great stuff.

Agreed, wouldn't mind if I never heard Lux Aeterna again.

It is a good thing I don't own a TV, so I can still enjoy that piece :p

To note though, news like this is one of the advantages of today's games being bigger profile with bigger budgets.

Zimmer is a different beast, more action.. and you named on some of this latest films. He dates back to the awesomes like Top Gun, Days of Thunder and the like. Jack Wall was AWESOME in ME1 but in this article they say Clint is only doing the ending score of the game...

... we know what that means. Pure, raw unadulterated emotion.

Am I the only one bored with orchestral music or generic-sounding synthesizer music?

Well, think of it this way. Bear McCreary did all the original music for Battlestar Galactica... which was just perfectly suited to that series in every single way imaginable. Dark, gritty, epic and with a style that couldn't be mistaken for anything else. At the same time he was composing all those BSG pieces, he was (and is still) doing the campy, light hearted original music for Eureka.

Most good composers can taylor their musical pieces to fit with whatever film/show they happen to be composing for. I'd say that Mansell can probably create something that will fit with the Mass Effect universe quite well while eliciting the emotional response that the developers are looking for. Or maybe it will be a disaster. What am I, a fortune teller? :p

Agreed. Jack Wall's stuff fit the original blade runner/cyberpunk atmosphere of the game much better.

Likely due to enlarged egos from the success of the original and pressure to deliver on sales, the producers were obviously taking ME2 more into the Bruckheimer/Bay zone, and the final installment will be the denouement of this (de)evolution. Unfortunately, the transition from subtle, atmospheric to the extreme limits of cheesy melodrama is commonplace in trilogies like this. I can almost hear the musical director's conversation with Jack Wall..."Jack, it's never easy doing this, but we've decided to go in another direction."

Some of this guy's stuff is ok, but most of it just sounds like music for a high-budget telenovella/melodrama. Lady Gaga would have been hilarious and a better choice in an absurdist point of view... but were not dealing with high art here.

I don't think it's fair to say that ME2 was a Michael Bay "devolution" at all. What makes you say that? It may have had a few more intense action-packed moments, but the game was still full of a sense of depth and thoughtfulness that few games, if any, reach these days. Or are you one of those people that viewed the removal of the pointless inventory system of ME1 as some kind of "dumbing down"?
