Anyone else tried this out?

I am actually really getting into it and really enjoying it. I haven't played a ton, but it looks to have fixed some of the quirks that I saw in the 2012 version (note: turn achievements off in the options menu) and is really scratching my city-building itch right now.

After realizing that the new Simcity looks like it's going to be a bit of a dud for core fans of the series (see here for a 10 minute podcast of me venting my disappointment with what I have heard of the new Simcity game), I saw this game and am enjoying it so far and thought I would see if anyone else has had the same experience.

Note: turn off achievements and be careful when saving as the saving/loading interface is a bit strange.

Cities XL had potential, but other than good GFX it doesn't do anything right.

Well, maybe I haven't played it long enough, but it definitely seemed to be simulating a city pretty well to me (roughly on par with SC4). If I built things, the surrounding areas would respond fairly intuitively, and the city seemed to be behaving in expected ways.

I have every plan to put some more time into it this weekend, so hopefully I still disagree on Monday ;).

Is this the same or is it different than the previous release of 2012?

I have CitiesXL 2012 already. My only issues with CitiesXL 2012 is with traffic and employment satisfaction needs. I have the jobs and the roads in place, yet they're complaining about traffic-- using only one road or street-- and complaining about work when there's an abundance of skilled jobs, etc.

In Sim City, it was easier to satisfy needs and, after Rush Hour, traffic was more manageable and Sims were more easily satisfied.

Its just like 50 new buildings...they didn't fix any bugs like the memory leak issue when you get over 150k people in your city....

Cities XL 2011 was a great game. Looked great, but had piles of issues, performance aswell as gameplay problems.
Company went tits-up and focus took it over. Changed the 1 to a 2 and we ended up with Cities XL 2012.
Platinum is the same thing, but 2012 is gone and platinum is in its place along with a few new buildings.

All the gameplay and performance issues are still present. Focus doesnt even have a dev team for the game.

Shame,. because its a great game...just horribly broken.

Well, over the last two days, I put about 14 hours into the game which is pretty crazy given my schedule (two kids under 4, so basically I played this by not sleeping). I was really loving the game...

I thought the game was fantastic. I am not seeing the concerns that you all are mentioning about performance issues. My largest city was about 750K in population, only covered about 20% of the total landmass, and it was a bit slow, but I wouldn't say unplayable by any stretch. If anything, I would have been disappointed with the game if a city that size didn't chug a bit on my PC. My PC specs are below plus I had F@H running in the background, and I didn't notice any real performance difficulties at all.

It's not a perfect game by any means, but no game has scratched my Simcity itch as well as this game since SC4. I would argue there are several real improvements over SC4 in this game and a number of features that appear to have been "borrowed" for the new Simcity.

The road-building can be quirky. Sometimes zones don't recognize they are next to roads, and the game is unreasonably difficult unless you build multiple cities and trade between them (trading with Omnicorp is a bad idea), but it is pretty quick and easy to set up small specialization cities.

Overall, I really highly recommend it though. Building bus lines along the actual roads is a great feature and really satisfying. Love the terrains and the resource specialization. Trading between cities can make some things a little too easy (no need for pollution in basically all but one of your cities).

By the way, the single city terrain is humongous! I played for 8-10 hours on a single city and covered less than a quarter of it. And I had only started getting high density zones.

I am planning to play some more and maybe post a podcast to give a more thorough discussion of its benefits.

One other thing. I don't know how much was improved in Cities XL Platinum from the previous versions, but if you have either Cities XL 2011 or 2012, the Platinum version is less than $5 on Steam. I just picked it up on a chance, but I am really hooked.

I would definitely recommend taking out the cheesy achievements pop-ups in the options menu though.

yeah i owned 2011 and picked it up for 5 bucks but really the same game.

That is a shame. I think it is a very fun game in its current format, but that doesn't excuse lazy iterations to pick up incremental sales. I would still recommend it to people interested in a solid city-builder though.

Well, I am very interested to keep playing and see if I run into any of the performance issues you all mentioned. Although nothing personal, but I hope you all are wrong :).

They're not wrong unfortunately. Once you hit a certain spot, memory leaks come into place. It's game breaking.

yup. well documented and a fatal flaw that wont be fixed.

50 new buildings and a new title. Thats it.

Focus doesnt have any devs for the game. They outsourced the new buildings for 2012 and platinum.

Glad I read this before I bought it. Really want something on Steam to cure my SimCity itch.
