CD Rom drives showing errors

I friend of mines computer is having problems with the optical drives. Its a Compaq Presario 5000 with a P4 1.5 and 256m ram. The two optical drives show up in device manager but have errors. We swapped out ide ribbon cable, changed out drives and even placed one of the drives on the ide cable with the hard drive and it still shows up with errors. If I am not mistaken it shows unable to load drivers. Device manager shows the correct drives but thats about as good as it gets. Any ideas?

They do, I placed them in a working PC and both drives are working fine.
