can't open ipconfig

hey,

on my verizon fios home network, my downstairs wired computer is connected to the internet. upstairs is a laptop which is primarily wireless and had 'limited or no connectivity' to the network. hitting 'repair' doesn't work. so i wired it, same problem. basically verizon told me that i had to use the ipconfig to release and renew the ip address. i used the run command for 'ipconfig', and the box pops up and closes. i tried chkdsk and that works fine.. i then went to accessories > command prompt and got the same thing. i checked the system32 folder and there is an ipconfig file in there.. any help is appreciated, thanks!

You need to open up a command window.

Click start, hit run. Type cmd and hit enter. This brings up a black DOS-looking box.

Type ipconfig and press enter

Try this:

1. Go to start, run, and enter CMD.EXE and press enter.
2. A black box should open up. Now you can type in IPCONFIG.

IPConfig is a command line tool. If you run it using the run window, it will pop up and disappear. But, if you open a command window first, it won't exit right away and you can see the information it displays.

To release the IP address: IPCONFIG /release
To renew the IP address: IPCONFIG /renew

To get out of the command prompt, type EXIT and hit enter.

the accessories > command prompt is the exact same thing

when i use the cmd.exe it opens and the directory is c:\documents and settings\my name
i typed ipconfig and its not recognized a file or command. i changed the directory to c:\windows\system32 and tried the 'ipconfig /release' command and the line afterwards says 'windows ip configuration and nothing else. same thing with /renew

Ipconfig is not the end-all fix-all solution for your internet connectivity.

If the repair feature and ipconfig /renew feature doesn't jumpstart your internet (eg; gives no results in your command prompt), then your problem lies elsewhere. The possibilities can be many:

Do you have another computer? Check and see if it can go online. If not, then its not either of your computers, it's something else.

Restart your router (or cablemodem or DSL modem). Unplug it or turn it off for about 30 seconds, then turn it back on. If nothing happens, then reboot your router software. You should see a pin hole somewhere where you can stick a tip of a pen in and wait til the router light turns off, then take the pen out, and let the router reinitialize.

No workie? Check your cables. Wireless? Check your signal clearance.

If you know someone nearby that uses the same service as you, call them up and find out of they can get online. If not, call your internet provider and ask them what the status is on your area internet.

If you're sure the internet works, and it's your computer thats giving you problems, try reinstalling your NIC driver. Check your settings too in Network Connection. Make sure DHCP is enabled if you're automatically connecting to the internet (by checking "automatically obtain IP address" and also DNS server address).

I'm sure other people can offer more advices if you still face problems with your internet.

You didn't mention how old the laptop was...but if it runs Windows 98 or ME, you'd want to use the winipcfg command.

Maybe there's a bit of information missing from this thread as well. On the PC that is connected go and do an ipconfig and see what address it has. If it's plugged directly into a modem device you got from verizon and doesn't have a private address (one that begins with 192.168.x.x generally) it's getting a public address directly from verzion, and my bet is you only get one, so if that's the case, time go buy yourself a wireless router.

If that's not the case, I'd go with the posts above and try to check with a different PC to see if you can get it on and narrow it down to either the service or the devices. Not having used Vista that much I'm not sure about this, but if you are running vista, does ipconfig work the same? Someone else can probably answer that for you.

Could have sworn that wasn't there before...then again I've answered a lot of questions this morning.

In any case, I'd suggest an ipconfig /all to see what's going on here.

If you type ipconfig and you get no results, then you have no active network connections. Something is not plugged in or disabled.

hey.. thanks for all the help

the ipconfig release/renewel didn't help so I just figured it was a driver issue.. I put in the driver CD that came with the compaq laptop, which didn't work either. I just ended up reformatting and it finally connected to the network..
