Can' t get DXTweaker to work!

I get very noticeable tearing without enabling vsync, but I also can't stand the abrupt frame rate changes from vsync. :( This why I'm giving triple buffering a try, and from what I've read, DXTweaker is currently the only way to force triple buffering in D3D games.

I'm having trouble getting DXTweaker to work, though. Whenever I try to run the .exe, I get the following error:

I have the program properly unzipped, with DirectX 9.0c properly updated. .NET Framework is installed. Anyone have any ideas as to why it won't run?
 
You need to download the latest DirectX redistributable pack (August 2006). It should contain all of the previous updates. Usually, they are required for ensured stability with the latest drivers in all of the latest games.

Yeah, I love DXTweaker... too bad it's not being updated constantly. Sometimes, SuperSampling AA even works on ATI cards!!! It's so nice to play the older games with 2x2 (true 4x) SuperSampling AA. That is what Voodoo5 cards used to do with FSAA. It also includes 4X AF for free, but SuperSampling AA brings a serious performance hit.

Even Chronicles of Riddick is playable with 2x2 SuperSampling AA on my 7900GTX (looks great at 1024x768--gets rid of the shimmering texture edges without having to turn LOD all the way down). I tried forcing it through RivaTuner, but it did not work. It seems that only DXTweaker can force it sometimes.
 
If it still won't work, try updating the video drivers to a different version, perhaps a tweaked or modded version. If it's not solved yet, then use DriverCleaner Pro to uninstall everything and then reinstall the drivers.

Umm.. what else.. oh yeah, install .Net Framework 1.1 and 2.0.
 
I would love for ATI and Nvidia to officially support all the different SuperSampling AA modes in their drivers. For example, Nvidia's 8x AA used to be 2x multisample AA added to 2x2 supersample AA. Not too long ago, Nvidia's 8xS AA was dumbed-down for performance enhancements, which is now 4x multisample AA added to 2x1 supersample AA. The old 8x looked much better but was slower.

It's nice that ATI offers 6x FSAA, but ATI does not offer any of the supersampling solutions except for Adaptive AA which does it only on alpha textures.

Why do Nvidia and ATI have to limit our options by refusing to offer it in their drivers? I think that they should respect the customer who pays $500 for a video card by adding an "Advanced Options" menu to their driver settings which offers all of the options you could see in RivaTuner for nvidia cards, and MORE! Rivatuner usually cannot force these modes in a lot of the games because Nvidia does NOT officially support these modes (like pure 2x2 SuperSampling AA or the old 8x AA. By the way, 16x AA is jaw-droppingly amazing especially with the newer games. 2x2 SSAA can only be done up to 2048x1536 resolution due to the internal rendering limit of 4096x4096 pixels (the same goes for 4x4 SSAA, which cannot be done on resolutions higher than 1024x768).

I guess Nvidia and ATI just want to keep things simple. They probably believe that it is more efficient to just crank up the resolution as much as possible, and then use simple Multisample FSAA with transparency AA in combination with AF. Not all of us have monitors that support insane resolutions. Some of us play old games like Quake 3 on 19" monitors that only support 1280x1024 resolution, but are using the latest video card. So, we want the absolute maximum image quality, which would be 16x AA (4x multisampling added onto 2x2 SSAA) plus 16x AF. It'd actually be like 32x AF because of the added AF from supersampling. Transparency AA would no longer be needed because everything is being anti-aliased in supersampling.

Nvidia and ATI, please respect the hardcore gaming customer. I am voicing it out right now, because not enough have voiced it out.

Yeah, there are rumors that the upcoming G80 and R600 will implement new AA methods. Perhaps my wishes will come true at last!!! Also, Nvidia should implement High Quality AF like they did with GeForce FX and earlier cards, but up to 16x this time, in order to save further embarrassment when compared to ATI.

Damn, I should learn to use less words when trying to express my concern, in order to make it easier on your (the reader's) poor eyes.
 
One more thing, Backslash, if you're using ATI cards, you do not have to use DXTweaker in order to force Triple Buffering in D3D games. It's easier to do with ATI Tray Tools.

It's funny how Nvidia offers the Triple Buffering option in the drivers menu, but when I played Half Life 2, I still had to force it through DXTweaker. Maybe this Nvidia setting only works for OpenGL games, just like with ATI's official driver option.
 
can someone please tell me how to set up dxtweaker to launch HL2 (and other steam games) with tripple buffering enabled? i used hl2.exe and it doesn't work.

Add the command line arguments for specific HL2 games. You can find them by right-clicking on the shortcut to whatever game you want to play (Icon on the desktop or shortcut in the Start Menu), then click on "Properties" in the bottom of the right-click menu, and then you'll see the argument following "hl2.exe" or something like that. Just copy-n-paste that "-argument" in DXTweaker where you should type it.

For triple buffering.. make sure that there are at least 2 back buffers... also make sure that it's checked and activated.
 
I would add that once you enable triple buffering in Direct3d games like Half-Life 2 (with vsync of course), the performance boost is outstanding.
 
No to go OT or anything, butis a lower Refresh Rate better with VSync on? Say 60-75 rather then 85+? I think it would be, as youd have more head room before your FPS gets divided, but if your forcing 3-Buffering then it should matter regardless, yea?

That is correct. I recommend 60hz for a decent gaming rig like mine, which works well for games like HL2 and Doom 3 at 1600x1200 with some AA and AF.
 
For example, if I want HL2 episode 1 to launch from DXTweaker, I add "-steam -game episodic" to the Arguments box. The path ends with 'hl2.exe', which is already added after browsing for the .exe file.

For triple buffering, open "Modules to load" and then put a check in the box next to "Present Changer".

Then open "Module Properties for Present Changer" which will be in the bottom segment of the window. Type "2" in 'Count' box for Backbuffer.

Last, make sure that it is Active.

There are other arguments... such as "-app 220" for Counter Strike (I think.. not sure).

Right. I could write an essay on this!

There should be a very good guide on the whole subject of Triple Buffering that everyone could link to. Maybe I should write one...
