I have one, my mom does, my dad does, all my friends do, come on you know you want to try it! j/k they rock, easy set up , fast , no problems! I think you should get one!
 
Not the Linksys. I have one and it crashes in confusion (requiring an unplugging) whenever it tries to handle too many connections at once. Usually when I'm using bittorrent (every 15 mins or so) but sometimes during normal use. They've probably fixed it on the newer models, but I've had problems with other Linksys devices as well and would recommend avoiding them.

I've heard lots of good reports about the Surfboard...
 
DR_K13, I just ordered one yesterday from newegg. :)

Hubby recently upgraded his cable to 4 mb down/512 up but is only getting 3.5 down and thinks the Terayon supplied by the cable co. is the problem, so we'll see.

Finally going to the dark side, building a PC and going to share the cable. Comps are actually only ~20' apart but are in different rooms so didn't want to deal with wiring.

What do you think of these for going wireless? (Don't blame me, mota picked them out. :p)

I wouldn't be mad at the 3.5 down you are getting. It seems like when you upgrade to a huge pipe like that, it almost never gets to the top of it's potential. Many who have 3Mbit down DSL only get 2.5 and so on....
 
Well, the irony is that he's actually getting 575 up instead of 512. :)

And no, he's not mad. He just wants MORE. :p
 
Im thinking about switching over to cable as im sick of my DSL's high ass ping rate which makes gaming online pure crap.

They only offer Linksys cable modems though and so far, non of the clients who have installed it with the linksys modem have had problems.
 
I set up a wire-less pc network for my dad, we used d-link extreme "G" cards, fast as hell, same speeds as a wired. if there is a wall between them you might need a access point antenna
 
So you guys really recommend the Motorola 5100 eh? Whys that compared to say the newer linksys models? I guess I thought motorola stuff was crap.

Not it's not. The advertised speed is but real world for wireless is still WELL below cat5. It's also shared so forget about comparing an AP to a switched wired network, at least if bandwidth and throughput is the subject. Wireless has improved dramatically but if speed is the concern copper still has the wide advantage.

Also, any AP will need an antenna, and they all have them. There are actually AP's sold without dipoles but only so you can choose the gain you require on them. AP's are intended to be sold and working sans radiators. Even internal mini pc wireless client cards have an antenna. It's about as important as the radio.

Woohoo! FedEx came a day earlier than originally scheduled. newegg rocks!

Anyway, hubby hooked up the Motorola surfboard tonight, went thru the auto config stuff and was able to get 5.4 on the downside! Just amazing. :)

He seems to be capped at 575 up though. Still, that's damn sweet and I'm gonna love sharing it. :p
 
Just got my cable activated last night. I got download caps of 400 kbyte at times, over twice that of my DSL! :eek: Upload is around the 280 kbyte range. Im now doing extensive testing to see how stable it is during games. Im getting a few hiccups in the ping but I guess thats gonna happend with shared bandwith. I'll have to do more testing to see if it gets worse

The 5100 is doing a great job, no problems so far.
 
I feel like i need to brag about my cable :)
I am using optimum online and I'm getting 10Mbit download :)

$60 :( But Adelphia is the only cable available where we are and the upgrade from 3Mbit was only $5/mo.

EDIT: gfresh, I'm curious as to how much your 10Mbit costs, and what is your upload?
 
Fark, Im paying $45 for my 3.0/256 service now and thats only cause my folks have digital cable with the company. I"d spend the extra $15 in a heart beat. Heck, my 1.5/1.0 DSL was $54 a month!

Okay, I don't feel so bad now. :) He had Covad DSL and got switched to Speakeasy when Covad went under. It was almost as much as the cable and nowhere near as fast.

IceWind, yeah, I think it's less here if you have digital cable tv thru the same company but we don't. Plus once we get the wireless happening I can ditch the dialup I've had since the beginning of the intarweb, and that'll save $20/mo. to put toward the cable instead.

The only scary thing with sharing a connection is if it goes out, we're both dead in the water.

It be no different if Qwest.net my DSL provider had an outage, everyone would be down as well.

um im paying 40 for the first 6 months and 50 or 60 after, I believe my upload is around the 100kb/s 200kb/s range, but i hardly upload anything ever , so im happy with it :)
