What have people been doing with these apart from making awesome cases? A friend and I recently managed to use one
to control a small robot .

The casing is bare plastic right? Vinyl color the casing then, and dont worry about the texturing, the vinyl "dye" will go on over the texture, leaving it looking like it came from the factory in what ever colors you choose.
eBay.btw- does anyone know where to buy these things? I've been all over, and no one seems willing to just sell me a DoC2000

eBay.
do searches for "m-sys*," "doc*" and "disk-on*"
I've seen lots of them on there.
There was even a flash HD on a while back. I wanted it.
Also, those IBM CF HDs are pretty cheap now too. You can get the 350MB ones for like $35-40. Do a search for "microdrive*."
Then just pick up a CF to IDE adapter. I found cool ones on ebay a while back, but I forget what they were called/who made them.
EDIT: Here they are:

You only need 5v for CF, you can route it from the laptop drive cable if you don't mind soldering. I'm sure there's one out there that does it for you, but these adapters are more common.
Second item on page. $42 for a 340mb.
