Was wondering if simply placing a cap in parralel with an LED would cause it to 'breath' the power LED on the stacker flashes in Suspend to ram mode, just wondering if i could make it slightly less annoying.
 
No, unfortunately, it won't work. A capacitor in parallel will make the LED stay bright for a little bit after it loses power, then go dim and then dark. The speed it does this depends on the size of the capacitor and the current/voltage characteristics of the LED.

The first solution that comes to mind is a 555 timer circuit (to get the rising and falling voltage) hooked to an opamp (to provide enough current to power the LED). I'd draw a schematic, but I have no way to upload it from here (work).
 
Yeah, i can do that, might have an experiment with a cap in series to see what it does, cant really be bothered for something so simple. only asked cos i couldnt think if it needed parralell or series
 
The cap will be pulsecharged(if to large) or blink too fast to notice the malformed wave of the output.

You could rig a simple circuit if you had experience with electronics. But if you never took a class or had some extensive experience it would be to try to explain it.
 
You'll want either a 2-way LED or a second LED.
You'll need a disconnect capacitor.
Then, it gets fed by the SLP pin on the board. Or you can use a direct takeoff of the PSU's +5VSB pin, which should be hot in sleep/standby.
 
It's possible to make a LED "breathe" using two 555 timers or a 556 dual timer. Basically you use one timer to generate a slow triangle ramp, and the other using that triangle amp to create a pwm-like signal for driving a LED. I can't remember what the circuit looks like offhand.

You could also use a PIC12F508 micro to do it. Requires a lot less parts, but you'll need to know how to program one...
 
What does "breathe" mean in this context? Slowly grow brighter, then slowly become dimmer?
