Borderlands Incompatible Versions?

I got Borderlands as a download from Direct 2 Drive. When I try to connect to a friend who got it from Steam I get the error that its an incompatible version. We both have the Zombie Island of Dr Ned (gotten from our respective sources). Are Steam versions always incompatible with other digital distro sources?

Are you both running 1.2? Steam and D2D both need to release the patch and they usually lag a bit behind the retail release. In my personal experience, Steam usually patches much quicker so your friend may have the newer version and you might not.

edit- just checked and the D2D patch is available. Steam autopatches so if you haven't patched yet you just need to do that and you should be good.

also make sure all needed ports are open, i had this same issue with my steam copy connecting to family members retail copy and vice versa
