Borderlands 4

LOL this game has terrible optimization and crap performance unless you lower the resolution and also use frame gen.

Can this be fixed or made better with patches to this game?
They might be able to get it somewhat better, just look at Stalker, it had similar issues. After receiving numerous patches with Stalker I can get 125-150 fps with DLSS quality and 2X FG, my 4080 was getting hammered on 4K. I think we all know it's just a poorly optimized game, and the fault lays with the developers. If you take a look at the remake of Black Hawk Down which also uses the same UE5 engine version 5.4, same as BL4, it runs like a dream and looks fantastic.

Per the in-game FPS display it ranges from the mid 90's all the way up to 116. Most of the time it's around 104-105. I have Gsync set to cap out at 118 and the in-game FPS cap set at 120, but the game never seems to go over 116.
That's acceptable, although I wouldn't want to do that with a 4080, it would probably be half what you're getting.

I'm still having 0 performance issues on my setup, so playing it is enjoyable enough. 4K, everything cranked, DLSS quality and framegen on. At the same time, the art style is doing the game no favors. Enemies just kinda look like blobs until you get right on top of them. The engine is pushing a zillion polygons only to have everything stylized into looking like there are only a handful. From a technical standpoint it's a step up from Borderlands 3, but from a stylistic standpoint I like 3 more. Humor-wise, it's also not quite sure what it wants to be. I dunno. I'm not far enough to truly judge it, but I'm not loving it so far.
I agree with everything you said.

I just picked this up. I guess I couldn't resist seeing what all the fuss was about. It runs ok on my ARC B580. I haven't gotten around to trying the 5090 yet. It's yet another game that still looks pretty good with the settings dropped down. I'm running mostly on low settings with textures & AF all the way up and geometry on medium. 100-130fps at 1440p with XeSS balanced and frame gen enabled. Yeah, these guys like framegen so much they even implemented XeSS 2 so Intel cards can framegen properly. I've mostly been playing with framegen on, but it was around 65-75 without it the little bit I played.

Playing this game I can literally heat my room this winter, nothing is overheating and temps are fine but everything is getting a workout.
I wonder how many watts I'll pull with a 5090 and an Intel proc. Might have to crack a window this winter.

Hit level 10. I desperately need some guns lol. Also need a grenade that is more than the vortex one I am using right now. Just got some scanner stuff and not even sure wtf is going on in the story. Getting mostly 130 fps.

My main idissapointement so far is that rocket launchers and other heavy weapons have the same slot as grenades, miss chucking grenades when I have one of those equipped.

You don't want a grenade. Or mini gun or anything else for that slot.

You want a throwing knife that guarantees increased damage / auto crits.

I got one at level 12, I'm still using it at lvl 30. You don't care about the damage it does, you care about the debuffs.

I dont know, or care, what the auto detected settings are for my Ryzen 5 and 3070, but the game looks good, and I've enjoyed it. Had one crash but other than that it's fun. FPS , no idea.

This series is 16 years old already the kid in electronics said Borderlands 1 is a good game I was hooked 1-2 years on my PS3 Slim and projector.
I'll be lucky to see another 16 years. I like the crazy recitals in this game once you see those damage numbers with low powered guns. I wonder how crazy the Gernades will be in this game. In Tiny Tinas Wonderlands there were some really different grenade mods.
Oddly, I thought it was older than that. This feels like a game that came out while I was still in university.

I didn't play the first one, but Borderlands 2 was great, I was running two Nvidia GTX 480's in SLI. It was like a double blowtorch, trying to keep the temps in check was next to impossible.

This really feels like the game that should have come after borderlands 2. Could be a bit bloodier but still funny punching someone and their brain pops out. Game is a lot of fun, I am glad. Wife an I put in at least a few hours over the weekend!

I dunno if you wear a cape or not, but you should, my hero! haha thanks for those!

I did as well! Was nice in the winter having those 480's lol. Wasn't a fan of 3 at all. But, I am really enjoying 4 tbh. The only saving grace is having 4x FG. Only way to get a good 150-200fps in 4k maxed out.

Best part of 2, fast. Fast loads, fast transitions, no "delays" for stuff (minimal). And .... just fun. Something game companies forget. They could use the style and engine from 2 and make a new game and people would play it (and maybe not tank the reviews). I know that most gamers are used "break time" for level loads nowadays.... there was a day...

You guyz running the lastest Nvidia Drivers? People say it crashes with the Borderlands 4 supported set.
I suppose I should wade though Reddit for a better view.

I think I'm still on the opposite end of things. I had a blast with Borderlands 3 (even to the point of hardcore grinding the highest DPI stuff on the highest difficulty) but am still kind of "meh" on this one. I liked 2, but I definitely preferred 3.

I imagine that it can't be easy deciding how to approach new projects for a developer like Gearbox. You don't want to end up like Destiny 2 or all of the MMO's forever piling content onto an old platform everyone is sick of. At the same time, you also run the risk of making something totally new that doesn't resonate. That's potentially even worse. Especially when a pile of your superfans got accustomed to playing your last title on a potato. Looking at Borderlands 4, the visuals don't match the horsepower this thing needs. That's coming from someone running it pretty much cranked, too.

Borderlands!!! Everyone is waiting for the new Borderlands!! People will pay any price for new Borderlands!!!!

No. We're waiting for Half-Life 3, which in all fairness could be great level designs using the ancient Source Engine even. PC requirements: "whatever" (I doubt we'll get super fast, etc on HL3, but wouldn't that be nice?)

One thing Randy has mentioned that I do agree with is "use DLSS." In scanning various posts on Twitter, Reddit, and (before they get purged) Steam there are a lot of people that seem so diametrically opposed to using DLSS and FSR that they won't even try it. They start talking about fake frames and this any that, but they're rocking 40 and 50 series Nvidia hardware. Cards that were advertised with DLSS and "fake frames" as some of the biggest selling points. That doesn't mean the game isn't poorly optimized or whatever, but at least TRY using it before going ham and acting like your life as a gamer is over forever.

To be fair, Half -Life 2 ran like shit at release on slightly outdated hardware, too.

Can't wait for my weekend after tonight I asked off for vacation denied but I have 11 days to go after tonight. Hell Ghost of Yoeti might be a good game.

This a Nvidia Hotfitx or something or just as settings guide?
Steve re-ran some benches to see if the update did anything for performance and that's a big no, and he shows how shitty the game looks with Nvidia's "optimized" settings.
You could of scanned the video in a minute to find that out.

You could have scanned the video in a minute to find that out.
Why put in minimal effort when you can just ask someone/some LLM over the intertubes to send you a summary?

Also Daniel Owen did a video showing same thing.

As always, early adopters are beta testers.

Since Flings trainer isn't an option this is great again.

A new review by Tech Spot and it's not good, bottom line is it was poorly optimized during development.
That’s just a written version of the Hardware Unboxed vid. Which is fine, as the HUB and MUB fellas are known contributors to techspot.

That latest HUB vid is especially shocking given the visual quality disparity between Cyberpunk 77 and BL4, and even showing how BL3 looks just about as good as BL4 but performing at roughly 4x better.

Honestly don’t know how it’s possible to have the style and quality of video game design in BL4 unable to run more than 60fps on a 5090 native highest level settings.

Yikes, this game was not optimized it seems, even high-end [H]ardware it seems to run like crap, unless you use DLSS and Frame Gen, and run the game at medium settings and play at a low resolution. LOL WTF

Let's be honest here though - Borderlands is a cartoon visual style game. Even if you could run 120FPS on 4K native with everything cranked up, it'll still be a cartoon visual style game. So why does it truly matter here if you're using FG & DLSS/FSR to get the framerate you're looking for?
