Bizarre temps on Opteron

Recently purchased a ASRock 939 Dual-SATA2 and an Opteron 170, and installed it all today to put it to the test.

What I am experiencing is some very bizarre temperature readings from the motherboard. It tells me that the CPU is running extremely hot at around 54 degrees Celsius idle.

Interestingly though, when I run two Prime95 torture tests simultaneously, my CPU temperatures do not rise a single degree.,,

Anyone have any ideas?
 
3 things come to mind:

  • HSF / thermal paste not mounted / applied correctly.
  • Buggy bios reporting temps wrong.
  • Faulty temp probe.

Only one of those things are under your direct control, and can be looked at now. I'd do that first, and then start calling manufacturers :D
 
I've re-seated it twice, three times if you count me installing it with the stock cooler first.

My thought was perhaps motherboard temp sensor too... *sigh*. I don't want to have to return it though.

Actually, that is kind of an interesting note. I have the exact same temperatures with the stock HSF as I do with a Zalman 7000ALcu.

Common wisdom would suggest that my temps would drop significantly.
 
well, the max temp it can sustain is 70C, so technically you are safe <= 69C, but I wouldnt recommend it. I idle at 42 and load at 51 with a "cheap" Tt hsf on my opty in my sig
 
I have a opteron 170 on an MSI RS480 and it reports my idle at 51C when its at 800 Mhz and 0.85 volts and makes no diff in temp if i have my zalman 7000Cu at max fan speed or OFF! When i compare it to my external temp prob on the IHS it is exaclty 1/2 (within a degree) the temperature reported by the motherboard under all loads. Just my observation.
 
I do indeed have the latest BIOS. I have tried speedfan as well as looking in the BIOS to see the temp the motherboard itself is reporting
 
Is there somewhere I can purchase some kind of temp probe to slip in there? I would REALLY rather not RMA this board, as this is my only working computer right now, and it seems to be solid otherwise.

you can get a nice little temp probe from compusa. it will monitor 2 temps and it is only ~$10 if i remember correctly.
 
my dualsata did this also with a 165 and 170. im hopin for a bios fix to this soon. i can touch the heatsink (xp-120) right above the processor and its nowhere near the temperature being reported.
 
Some new info:

When I woke up this morning, after having left my computer off all night, I booted up, checked my sensor in BIOS first thing, and it said 26 degrees... just what I would expect it to. When I got into windows, it quickly moved to up to around 44 degrees, where it is holding now. Could it be a damaged core somehow?
 
No, I'm using a Zalman 7000 AlCu.

This is just bizarre, because even if the temps are being reported correctly because the heatsink isn't seated properly, I would expect that under load or not it would still vary by more than 2 degrees.

again mine does the same thing.
