Best upgrade from GTX 1070 in a 14th gen i3 desktop?

My family computer is the mentioned-in-title 14xxx i3, and the GTX 1070 is starting to crash from time to time. I could just buy a replacement, but Everybody Needs More GPU, so what's a good upgrade?

My budget is about $200

Maybe a used 3060 12GB version (usually $250 though) or a 4060 8GB (which can be found for closer to that $200 mark)? Given the newness of the overall platform, I'd try to go newer, but at $200 (assuming USD), no, unlikely.

Hard to go newer at $200 (or even $270).

Who knows, maybe you can snag a good FS deal in the forum (?)

I bet I could snag one from there, but while I've been on the forums since like 2002, my post count zeroed back whenever that happened to everybody and I don't have enough posts to be allowed to post on the FS forum LOL
I should get a mod to fix that :p

I hate to suggest better than 1070 cards that are still pretty ancient. Just doesn't feel right give the newness of the overall platform involved. To "save" some dollars you could also go with old team red. Maybe a used 5700XT, for example. That should be doable at $200 (I bought one a few years back at $150 used shipped, before AI chaos).

Reference RTX 3070 on eBay here for $200 shipped. Best bang for your buck, play at 2K (if your monitor supports it), and it will ease the CPU bottleneck than when playing at 1080P.

Is this a pre-built? How much power-supply headroom do you have to work with?

I think that something like a RTX 2080 Ti can be an incredible bargain. It's faster than a 3070, and has more VRam (11GB vs 8GB). The 2080 Ti also tends to have a lot of overclocking headroom, if you're willing to go that route. About the only downside is that it's fairly inefficient, obviously even more so if you overclock it. But I don't know any realistic other way that you would get that much GPU power for $200. That's exactly how much I bought a 2080 Ti for when I upgraded my backup rig recently.

There really isn't anything you can get new for $200 these days. The cheapest new cards are an Intel ARC B570 10GB, Radeon RX 7600 8GB or an RTX 5050 8GB, but those are both more than $200 with the B570 at ~$260, the 7600 at ~$280 and the 5050 at ~$300.

So off to the used market. That's really about what you can get a good deal on. If I wanted a $200 card there's an RX 6800XT on my local Craigslist asking $200. Also some fool asking $500 for a Radeon VII, along with a 3060Ti for $185. That 6800XT would be a great deal, Radeon VII is bonkers bad, and the 3060Ti is pretty reasonable.

The stuff I'd be looking for at $200 would be a good deal on something along the lines of RTX 3060Ti, RTX 4060, RX 6700, RX 7600, ARC A770 or better. 2080Ti or 2080 (super) could work too, though I'd prefer something newer since the 20 series is next up to get their game ready drivers dropped from support and they're power inefficient compared to newer stuff. I wouldn't bother with anything slower than an RTX 3060. That 6800XT someone posted on my local Craigslist 4 hours ago is way into the "or better" category. Kinda tempted to buy it but I already have a couple faster cards.

Not prebuilt, and the power supply isn't something I'm too worried about -- I choose reliably good power supplies with amps to spare. And YET I have had them fail. This computer should be able to handle an inefficient GPU

Hmmmmmm there's a $200 6800XT across the lake from me, might be the same card :D

I'm in Chicago... so Michigan or Indiana?

Michigan!!! Grand Rapids, equidistant from Detroit and Chicago, so I get to catch shows in each place a couple times per year. And do Knobcon (synthesizer convention) in Schaumberg. If the guy will mail it, I'll snag it (unless you beat me to it LOL)

Wasn't planning on chasing that one. I'm good for now. I have a couple faster cards. I just poked Craigslist to see what was around and maybe come up with an example. Wasn't expecting a potential buy lol. My whole point was supposed to be that you can dig around in the used market and sometimes really good deals pop up, especially locally, and hey a really nice local example dropped into my lap.

This is a good suggestion; I did something similar last year as a placeholder GPU.. and bought a Radeon Pro W5700 (performance wise sits somewhere around a 5700 and 5700xt)..
Got it for $100 before all SHTF. It is a very capable GPU for its age

The 5000 and 6000 series of AMD cards no longer have official driver support except for critical security updates and bug fixes. The 5700XT also performs 34.5% worse than a RTX 3070 at 2K. Reference 3070 is still on sale at eBay for $200. The RTX 3070 performs in-between a RTX 5060 Ti 8GB and a RX 9060 XT 16GB at 2K, but doesn't cost $360+ or $400+.

The RTX 2080 Ti is also a bit more expensive than an RTX 3070. People love that extra VRAM.

Everybody, this advice rules, thank you so much! I've bought the 6800XT

THANKS!!!
You landed that one in Chicago from ~180 miles away? Seller was willing to ship? Or did you find a show in Chicago you wanted to catch and are going to pick it up? Or some other card?

That should be a substantial upgrade as that card runs quite well at 1440P for most titles that aren't heavily ray traced.

The 3070 you posted, I liked (on your post) because it's a very very very very rare and exceptional deal. So, duh, yes, of course, if you can get a 5090 for $200, go for it. Wasn't trying to suggest otherwise.

It was a SCAM :(

I foolishly sent $ with Zelle, but the scammer kept trying to milk me for more, saying it hadn't been delivered. The funniest moment was when they sent a shipping label with three different fonts, and "Delivery date" spelled wrong.

Soooooo I'm back in the market. $200 poorer, so ...eventually....... Don't send money with Zelle, and don't trust any listing saying "catch me on Telegram @HomeDepot759" (or just mess with the scammer to waste time IDK they're very responsive)

Ouch! Sorry to hear that. Contact Zelle or your bank, usually the bank can do something about it.

It's the FS forum for me from now on. "Dalivery Date" indeed

What's your power supply (model and wattage)? That's likely to be your primary constraint, along with money of course, on what you can run.

In my area (across the state from you), I see various 2070's and the occasional 3060 in your price range. (and an RX 6700XT that might be a little too good to be true, I'd want to buy that one in person.)

Can you post in the FS forums yet? I have a Lisa Sue 5700 XT I am going to post there for $75 + shipping. Performance is around 2070 Super/1080Ti level with a feature set about the same as your 1070. I would recommend a more modern feature set card but at the $200 level, most of the modern feature sets besides DLSS/FSR4.1 are virtually pointless for games. Nvidia has superior OpenGL drivers, so if you are doing any professional type applications requiring OpenGL, Nvidia is better. In any case this card would be an upgrade, not too expensive and could make a decent stop gap and backup card later.

It's an EVGA 600 watt power supply, and I think it's newer than the video card.

noko That 5700 XT could effectively hold me over. Lemme check the FS forum real quick

5700 XT LS Edition uses 225w, one 6 pin + 8 pin PCIe connector, AMD recommending a 450w Minimum PSU.

That will work with my power supply! It's got the required 12V connectors.

And nope, 100 posts required for posting in the FS forum. This will be number 43.

That's for posting. Can't you comment, or just start a conversation with noko?

Ouch. Sorry to hear that.

I texted the seller on Telegram... 100% scam. Though I did talk him down to only trying to scam me out of $30. Dude wanted a reservation fee or some shit like that. I told him I wasn't sure if I could meet up this weekend because "my friend from Michigan just texted me". Hopefully he'll take the hint and be scared shitless if he gave me his real address. Not sure if he gave me his real address, but he gave me an address in Northbrook, IL. Probably fake. He's scamming, and Northbrook is a nice suburb.

The scammer has listings all over the country, many of them just copy-paste of, like, a $1,000 watch.

The return address on the label isn't a fancy neighborhood. I StreetViewed it. I tried to get the scammer to engage with me in a real way, but they wouldn't let the charade go. I can imagine a sweatshop-like setup with kids earning a pittance while their asshole boss keeps all the ill-gotten gains, and it's depressing. Hopefully the scammer needs the money more desperately than I do, and will use it for something good?
