Does anybody know anything about TV Tuners? Im looking to get the best one possible (must be PCI and S-Video input would be nice) so that I can play Halo 2 on my comp using my Promedias. Also, which software is the best?
 
you dont want one of the mpeg2 cards, they introduce a severe lag into the picture so you wouldnt be able to play.

One of the <$50 BT8x8 cards or the other common chipset that i forget (CTsomething) and DScaler software out to work fine. The picture quality will be awful compared to a TV however.

They also make those VGA connectors for xbox. x2vga or something? youd probably be much better off with one of those.
 
Do not get the ATI Tv Wonder VE...Sucks bad


HDTV Wonder is pretty cool though.
 
I have the Leadtek Winfast 2000XP Deluxe. Works like a charm and cheap too.

You don't use MMC with that, all that card comes with is WindowsMCE drivers. If you were to get that card it is assumed that you alittle about it and what programs will work with and anyone that plays with HTPCs know that. ;) It's a good card, I'd love to play with one now.

I've seen one like that for PS2's but I don't remember where. I believe The Batman (member here) uses this for that, just another alternative.

I know about ATI and have tried their AIW series. I dont like them and there are better cards out for the money ;)

Your right but this isn't an AIW. It's a hardware encoding card, little difference between it and Huappauge's 250 MCE.

The e-home is nothing like any of the other ATI tuners, it's a hardware encoder that is similar to the PVR-150 but it costs less and comes in models both with and without svideo+rca input. Uses the same encoder that almost all hardware based cards do, and the quality is basically identical to the hauppauge series. If you are on a budget there is nothing better for the money.
 
I dont care about hardware Mpeg2 support as I capture using either Huffyuv or Mjpeg and then encode it. As for Mpeg2 capture the AIW did well in it but thats about all it did well.
 
Oh, and do not attempt to play games directly through the tuner card. There will be a delay no matter what you do.

Oh really... hmmm. So my best bet is to get one of these VGA adaptor devices right? Can anyone say from experience what PS2 games look like on it, and if there is a DEFINITE loss of quality that could be rather annoying?
 
I've played DOAU on my TV Tuner and there isn't any delay whatsoever. I used to use WinDVR3, which somehow limited my frames to 30FPS, but this problem has since been alleviated when I changed to Dscaler. Keep in mind though that the IQ through the TV tuner isn't quite as good as it is on the actual TV; it looks blurrier than it should.
 
a good vga transcoder like i linked to should not degrade the image quality at all.
 
software maybe not as long as you leave it alone no post processing or conversion. this locks out items such as dscaler as it will introduce a delay Hardware reguardless will have a 1-2 second delay even if you run it in 'realtime'
 
I was going to get a VGA box, but there would be no way to take screenshots, unless I'm just grossly misinformed.
 
only way to do screenshots and record gameplay footage is with a capture card. well, you could use a digicam to take screenshots
 
I've tried with the digicam, but on anything but a flat screen it looks like garbage and you can see the scanlines too. The screenshots from the TV capture card aren't too bad, definitely better than stealing other sites' screens. :eek:
 
I don't know about your digicam but mine has a TV mode for something just like that.
