Battlefield 3 General Discussion Thread

I couldn't care less what was or wasn't in BF2.

your post made it sound like they were new
One thing that irks me about BF3 is the amount of passive ways you can get kills. I'd imagine they did this to make the game more noob friendly. Talking about items like the Javelin, mines and claymores
since they irk you about BF3, I guess they irk you in all BF games?

When you have 5+ random people shooting Jav's from across the map laying waste to all vehicles, you need absolutely zero team work and absolutely zero skill.

I am in the top < .01% of all BF3 players in vehicle score per minute and armored warfare ribbons, so I don't need any tips on what separates good players from noob's LOL.

5+ people working together to kill armor like that can PWN for sure. thats 10% of the server pop on the big ones, 20% of one team doing the same thing should OWN at it!

but one noob with a javelin isnt going to do much more than get some disables ETC.

whats your BL id?

I never played any other BF game, just BC2. Back then I was a competitive CS player. I only play on 64-player servers and even if people aren't working together, you get 3-5 people with Jav's randomly firing they can lay wast to their entire opposing vehicle fleet. Smoke will only help you so much, not to mention smoke removes vehicle zoom optics which is a huge hit to effectiveness.

My largest issues with the Jav is it's ridiculous simplicity to use, it's massive range and how invulnerable the user can be when firing it. All someone has to do is stick their head out from behind some rock hundreds of meters away, lock on for 3 seconds, fire and run away. This makes them near invulnerable if they even slightly have a clue what they are doing. People know it is an easy weapon so that's all they do. I've seen people just sit there the whole game spamming Jav after Jav. Makes for poor game-play and slows down the pace of the game.

gotcha. so they are kind of new to you, but Ive been playing with them for literally years

you can carry less javelins than SMAW/RPGS which helps

dear god your SPM is insane.

So a vehicle whore decrying an anti-vehicle weapon. Haven't we heard this story before? IR smoke is a perfectly good counter to the Javelin - so don't come crying to us when you choose not to use it.

How much skill does it take to drive around in an armored tank killing people? I'm quite sure you'd like the tank to be even harder to kill, but everyone else would like their favorite way of playing to be more powerful as well - at least you have the option to use a counter, infantry doesn't get a counter to grenades, or RPGs, or anything else.

I really like armor fighting in this game but people like to abuse the Jav. Armor has a hard enough time as it is in this game with so many Engineers firing RPG's, the Jav just makes it crazy easy to kill armor if people abuse it. I think it just has a lopsided risk (virtually zero) vs reward.

I've literally been in games where I've had four RPG's in mid flight all at my tank at once. You know that "whoosh" sound that you get when an RPG just misses you.. sitting still is death!

a smaller SOFLAM-esk glint would be helpful

but ive been killed many a time by tank shell to the face trying to get a lock

I'm a tanker and I don't have a problem with the SOFLAM/Jav. I rarely get hit by one as I POP smoke quickly. Some adjustments to it could be:

- Slightly longer lock time and less range for unmanned SOFLAMs.
- Points given to Recon for someone getting a SOFLAM kill/disable.
- Point bonus if you man the SOFLAM and someone uses it to get a kill.

The counter to the SOFLAM is the MAV. This is where offensive and defensive snipers come in to play.

You do get points if you are lasing a target and someone kills it. Either 45 or 60, I think it is. Doesn't compare to the 200+ you can get firing the Javelin, but at least it is something.

Really? Do you have to be in the unit? I've only used it a few times.

There's a bug where the recon doesn't always get credited with the soflam kill. Really annoying, all our capabilities are focused on indirect support yet it takes forever to earn our service stars when we properly do our jobs. :(

Quite a lot of people that go lone Wolf never even consider that it really is as simple as that. Their recon is self sacrificing to go someplace that can be seen from anywhere and get measly points spotting things that will give their position away instantly and don't even know if there's someone that will lock on for his efforts.

On the other hand, all it takes is a recon on your side to send up his mav and destroy it. It's as simple as that. When you see a recon, he's more likely to be carrying a mav than any other gadget for the above reason.

They're using teamwork to take out tanks with a javelin, counter it with your own teamwork. Don't go solo and then complain that 5 vs 1 is unfair.

That's why I'm ok with the current setup. Yes it makes for some easy kills, but it's teamwork. I think weapons that are enhanced with teamwork should get advantages. Just like how the Venom becomes a damn good helicopter with 2 engineers and 2 door gunners. Or how the attack choppers become beasts when they have two crews.

A tank squad with three (CITV station) can totally own a map if they're engineers and work together, regardless of Javelins.

Remember when TF2 was going to (when it was realistic) allow for machine guns to fire faster/stronger if an engineer was nearby? Or how certain vehicles in Tribes became more powerful (the bombers) if you had more occupants? It's based on that idea. It takes teamwork to counteract teamwork.

Otherwise the JAV is just a direct-fire weapon that exposes the individual firing it - couple that with limited ammo (2 without the EXPL specialization, iirc). Limited ammo is a big factor considering no-one drops packs :)

Yes, it seems hit or miss. But I also think you get credited sometimes even if they don't use the Javelin for the kill. So if you are locked on a helo, and a jet shoots it down, you sometimes get the points also. I guess it all evens out in the end. Still not enough points though, considering how big a target the SOFLAM is. I much prefer to use the CITV station (plus the ridiculous low mouse sensitivity for the SOFLAM makes it a pain to use).

anyone know anything about the next map pack?

I heard people talking how it was going to all be urban warefare maps (which I like)

i'm also interested in info on the next map pack. i'm already bored with the B2K maps, i spent a lot of time in them in BF2.

What are your guys' accuracy with how many kills?

5127 kills with 19.9% accuracy.

12,311 kills 16.1% accuracy

i've been slowly working my way towards getting a service star for all 75 weapons. so far i have 60 of them done. only some hand guns, the IGLA and STINGER, and the M320 left.

God I really hate the vehicle entry bug. You know, the one where you press to enter and there are "dead spots" around the vehicle where it doesn't let you enter even if you are dry humping it's wheel. So annoying. Screws up my tank warfare, exit/entry RPG/SMAW play.

Another annoying bug I'd like to bring up to see if anyone has experienced this before. Driving along in a full 100% life tank, go up against another tank from the front, he shoots you, you hear a different kind of loud "clank" sound than normal and in one shot he put your tank burning. From my understanding a main tank round to the front should only do 22-24 damage at the most. Whenever I shoot another tank to the front that is all the damage that I do.

It doesn't happen all the time but it happens enough to really piss me off. I am not sure if the bug is movement related, but I've tested shooting static tanks and no matter where I shoot, front, treads from the front, turret, front underbelly, it did the standard damage. So does anyone know a "trick" to get this massive damage frontal shot or is it just some random bug that I keep running into constantly?

Now here is a strange one: I was playing in Metro as Support class, I get killed and then when the medic revives me, I am all of a sudden Recon class, with weapons I haven't unlocked yet (scoped magnum and some submachine gun that I can't remember). It was as if I was reincarnated into another life  :D.

Bizarre one off glitch; something I would imagine couldn't possibly be re-created. Unless someone else has experienced this. Very odd.

i just got one this evening. He hooah-ed a coop missing between me and someone else.

google his name + bf3 and many people get this. seems to be a bot that does it so you check his profile and visit his website.

I reported the fucktard. :p

Someone probably picked up your kit while you were dead, so you got theirs when you were revived. I've had it happen on those few times I'm assault and my teammate is smart enough to take my kit and revive me.

It's not a bug, tanks have a weak spot on the front, it's supposed to be just under where the cannon meets the turret in that little seam where it joins the body. It's a 1 shot disable, and another one there will finish you off. I don't think I've ever had a successful shot against someone else, I must always just barely miss somehow. I had one guy consistently hit me there everytime I went up against him, and I was sure he was cheating until I found out about the weak spot lol.

Hm, interesting. Did you test this out or read about it? I could have swore I tested that seam before to no effect. I think it must be dumb luck the amount of times I get hit in that special spot.

Probably not, because he got that info from BF2.

yup.

10 for the designation(only when manned I think) 40 for the hit, but you only get credit like 30% of the time

I always thought it was a vulnerability to the top of your tank; If your tank is angled downward, towards the enemy, when they fire at you, they've got a better chance at hitting the top vs the front. I've never actually tested it though, that's what I've always assumed though. But yes I've had that happen many times, where a single hit to the "front" of my tank will cause a disable.

I think i'm finally getting the hang of the tv missile. Never realized it before, but it seems to out range the AA tank :p

Nothing out ranges the guided rockets in the driver seat of the heli though. You can snipe tanks from 2000+ meters away.

Played a little over lunch today, I love it when I am absolutely wrecking faces with the USAS and people get all upity and shit and start bad mouthing me lol......especially when the guy bitching like a girl, starts spawning near me and I keep blasting him in the face.

I wonder if he enjoyed me tea bagging his corpse every time lol? :) That might not have helped his rage hahahaa

its annoying - but its part of the game, the funny thing is the amount of people that dont understand how to counter things, they just go on bitching and losing

Or calling it a noob gun when its one of the last guns to unlock.

I've read about it, but I've also had other enemy tanks hit me there, and it was also when we were both on level ground so it wasn't just taking a hit to the top at an angle.

Probably not, because he got that info from BF2.

http://www.enterbf3.com/topic/6235-advise-for-using-tanks/page__view__findpost__p__77540

Particularly this:

13. Tank weak spots:
turret tops - why do you think those silly engineers like to hide on roofs?
bottom of the tank - if a tank is going up an incline shoot for the bottom. Works for C4 laying as well.
back of the tank (engine) - two shots there and that tank is toast
turret opening below cannon - hard to hit but if you got the shot take it.
If you are facing a tank head on or firing at the sides then you are doing it wrong. Back off and use distance and obstacles to handle this situation.

And btw, the best weak spot for the front of tanks in BF2 was always the front of the treads where it's sloped, not the turret seam.

I've always thought that the damage system on tanks is only computed from the horizontal rather than an actual hitbox.

turret tops - why do you think those silly engineers like to hide on roofs?

This might be related to the Javeline mythology. There are some claims that a javeline (without a soflam) aimed up will hit the tank from above and do a ton more damage. This is false.

Likewise, shooting a rocket from the top of a building will not net you more damage than at ground level.

bottom of the tank - if a tank is going up an incline shoot for the bottom. Works for C4 laying as well.

Front, back or top. C4 damage is the same. C4 from the ground is actually lower because it's not attached to the tank.

back of the tank (engine) - two shots there and that tank is toast

This is pretty much the only thing that's been proven, and it complies with the directional damage.

turret opening below cannon - hard to hit but if you got the shot take it.

Easy enough to prove, make a video on how it's supposed to be done please because i've done this dozens of times and have been unable to replicate it.
