Alright, so my eMachines 6810 met a very violent end this past weekend. Needless to say, I really really really doubt Best Buy will cover it under my 3 year warranty.

The CPU, RAM, HD, battery, and wireless mini-pci card all still work perfectly. The only REAL damage is to the chassis and screen (toast).

Do I have any options for rebuilding? Can you buy just a barebones amd64 laptop? I looked all over for Arima's website and couldn't find that, as one possible source. Any suggestions?

What did you do?

I don't know of any barebones that take a 754 chip... :(

yeah man what happend, if its surge related and you have a psp then you are good to go.

"met a very violent end"? Come on, that just screams out that we need to see the pics.

i should take some pics.... :)

let's just say that the wife was REALLY REALLY REALLY REALLY REALLY REALLY REALLY REALLY REALLY REALLY REALLY seriously REALLY no shit REALLY pissed off at me in the middle of one of those "life-changing moment" fights.

Did your wife throw your laptop out the window?

Did you forget an anniversiary again...

floor.

repeatedly.
nah, we've got... real... issues... i guess. :/
nothing a few years of therapy or a few really expensive lawyers can't fix though.

my laptop, on the other hand.....
still waiting for suggestions.
any way to social-engineer BB into helping me out here? I DID spend like 300 bucks on that addon warranty that the sales guy SWORE would protect the laptop from even obvious physical damage.

bring it to em, and bitch up a storm.

and in the end if they wont fix it, you can return the warranty at any time, minues whatever percentage of time you'veused.

As of this time, anyway, there aren't any "whitebox" notebooks that you can get the mobile Athlons for. See the review of an ASUS notebook over at LegitReviews for their comments on why you can't get any AMD notebook barebones yet.

seriously?

that would be good. I'll maybe call them and see if i can get one of the managers at one of the stores to commit to fixing it before i take it in, too.

And don't forget to make sure you're pimp hand is good and strong cause I would of WHOOPPED dat ass! Seriously dood, sorry bout the wife, me=married also and I can imagine how bad I fight is to make a person repeatedly toss an expensive item like a notebook to the ground in anger! Good luck and I say press your luck with BB, if they sold you the warranty under the impression that this would be covered, i say call them on it!

hopefully it'll work. I think i'll try a low-key approach first. we'll see.

I hate to be the party pooper. But first off no best buy PSp covers in any shape or form Physical DAmage. Especially Obvious physical damage.
The person who needs to be repaying you is of course the wifey.
I know this.. because I work at Best Buy.. and I have been working in retail period in one shape or form for nearly 15 years. Now it is possible your home insurance might cover the laptop. :) You can always say a sever windstorm blew a branch onto and smashed your laptop.

I Am also sorry for your loss. And definitely you need to get some counseling for both of you. Cause it always takes 2 to tango. Unless there are some severe issues she has that you have no control over.

Anyway Good luck and sorry about that.

Even if that were true, I don't think it would cover the entire cost of the notebook. My wife works for an insurance company and she mentioned this to me when I inquired about it when I was looking into a laptop. It's probaby a good thing to try though... It's too bad more retailer's dont offer the dell type warranty that covers "droppage" due to user retardedness and the like.

sell the parts
the parts that are still good in the lappy are worth an easy $500
sadly the only barebones lappy's on the market are all based on chips other than the 754 athlon
the warenty from best buy is NOT going to cover such things
however what the warenty DOES cover is surges due to lightning :)
now there is no reson to assume a lightning surge could not short the laptop out.... causing it to overheat and melt into a pile of slag.....

something similer just "happened" to happen to my sears VCR a couple of years back... i had the extended warenty on it and and after taking it in and saying how i had woken up to find it like this after the lightning storm last night it got replaced without a second question

now by doing this you must realize you will be commiting insurence fraurd which is punishable by serious jail time and large fines
so please weigh the possible benifits and problems before doing anything

As far as a barebones Athlon64 notebook I picked up this notebook from Mwave a week or two ago. So far, I heart it. I added a gig of ram and a 7200rpm HD from newegg and now she screams. But since you have a processor and all already, you might want to check out EKM Online where you can get the barebones for like $950. I was going to order from them, but I couldn't find any info on ResellerRatings, so I went with Mwave.

P.S. - All my research actually came from this page @ AMDboard.com:
http://www.amdboard.com/athlon_64_notebook.html. They have all the Athlon 64 notebooks listed, including who makes the chassis, same models under different names, and reviews. It help me out a lot!! :)

here's the next question:

i use an amd mobile 2600 right now and it's a star overclocker. can i use the amd64 mobile 3000+ in a desktop system? what MB would be best?
