Backlight leakage?

Hi!

I recently purchased a new tft monitor. Since I never owned a tft monitor before I'm not quite sure what to expect in terms of image quality. I've seen other tfts before but it's a different matter when you use it in your own home when, for example, it's dark. How do I know that backlight leakage is too much or normal? I can indeed se that the screen isn't as black as my old crt. Another matter is contrast and color. Some colors differ from my old diamondtron crt, I guess that is ok... The contrast is also a bit strange because I cannot turn the contrast
up too much without loosing light colors, is that normal?

There is at least no dead pixels. I checked against some different background colors.

Please give me some tips on how I can determine that my new tft monitor is working correctly.

hi woel. Which model is it you have?

there's a few things here which would be worth checking. Backlight leakage is where the CCFL backlighting can be seen obviously, which normally occurs around the edges of the panel. A little bit of leakage is perfectly normal for a lot of screens, but some TFT's suffer from severe cases where it is very obvious. Take a look at this picture for instance of leakage on a Dell 2005FWP, a model which has been plagued by this problem for a long time.

Black depth on TFT's can vary quite a lot. Only modern VA panels offer really deep blacks, and modern TN Film panels also offer good black levels. They wont seems as deep as the blacks on your CRT though in a lot of cases, but again, the black reproduction depends on the panel used.

As far as the colours go, it might just be that you need to calibrate your screen. Try this monitor calirbation wizard and see if that helps. It will help you set the contrast and brightness too to help avoid the colours being washed out too much.
 
My monitor is a viewsonic vp191s, the new 8ms version. I will try the calibration tool as soon as I get home from work. ;) I guess the monitor is a little more black in the middle than the corners. I can only tell that black is not black when the room is a bit dark.

no problems. Yeah, the VP191B is generally a well made screen, you will notice some slight brightness around the edges, but nothing major i doubt. Quite a few people i have spoken to have gotten much better results after calibrating the monitor, so hopefully that will help you :)
 
I have the 2005 and 2405, also bought Sony 19" and Samsung 204T to try out for fun. And I can tell you, none of these LCDs had absolutely perfect backlighting, all had leakage more or less to some degree, the Dells actually had overall better backlighting than the Sony and the Samsung.

To answer your question, unless you can see the leakage in broad day light, you should be just fine.
