I know a lot about computers. I can tell you pretty much anything you need to know about any component in your rig. But I will be the first to admit I know next to nothing about networking and wireless security.
I came across a problem last year while living in an off-campus apartment complex that is administrated by the school's housing service. Since we are on the school's network, our use of the internet is slightly restricted. The school does not block access to any site or censor the internet in any way, which is great, but they will not allow us to set up our own wireless networks.
Last year my internet was suspended because the network admins found that I had a router hooked up to my network port. I couldn't understand why this would be prohibited since my network was not broadcasting and was secured with WEP2 (or whatever that security protocol is). Of course I got really mad and sent tons of lengthy e-mails complaining to the IT department but the end resolution was that I basically just couldn't set up a wireless network and I had no say whatsoever because they have no way of monitoring security on a wireless network.
Now, I really want to set up a wireless network in my apartment. Being able to study in places other than at my desk, typing a report and doing research while the TV is on, and just plain having internet access in more convenient locations is something I think would be very beneficial to the education of my roommates and myself.
So, when I had the wireless router going before, they told me that they had "detected multiple MAC addresses on my internet port. I don't know what MAC Addresses are, I assume they have something to do with individual computers, but I figure that the geniuses on this forum might be able to help me out here. How can I have a wireless network in my apartment and avoid this kind of detection? Hide the MAC Addresses?
I am willing to do anything, like using a secondary computer as a WAP. My last resort would be buying a data plan for my phone and using it as a WAP, but I don't really feel like I should have to pay $15 a month extra for something so simple.
