i couldn't use it. i'm more of a power user i guess lol. right now i dual boot XP SP3 RC2 on the SSD and then Xubuntu 7.10 on an 8GB SDHC card. i even have compiz running and coupled with an overclocking module someone over at eeeuser.com made, it runs REALLY nice. kind of amazing to be honest. and its the first time i've had a perfect distro install. the reason i say that is, i haven't fucked it up yet while tinkering with the terminal lol.
 
I'll also be joining the Asus EEE club, bought it off another member, wohoo!

How are the stock speeds of the Asus? I'm contemplating whether or not I'll be overclocking... I definitely don't need it to do anything except light browsing and maybe some SNES roms, so I might just leave it stock. Does overclocking make it substantially warmer? Any other thoughts you overclockers out there?

WOOHOO! same reason I got it! lol. Mine plays all snes roms on Zsnes just fine @ the stock 630mhz. I do have a gig of ram though. I am still trying to figure out mupen64...

Its an awesome little pc

These aren't rumors. The Asus CEO mentioned the new chips being Atoms specifically. I would say to wait until after the revised version comes out. We will get the 8.9 inch screen ones sometime in April or May. However, come around June, we will get a redesigned EEE that supposidly has a "New York sleekness" to it, according to the CEO. Specs will be the same as the 8.9 inch ones coming out in April/May. The Windows version will come with 8 gigs of space, 1 gig of ram, and the Atom chip (IIRC Atoms can be had with 1.0 Ghz and 1.6 Ghz...not sure what the EEE will utilize). The Linux based EEE will come with 12 gigs of space, 1 gig of ram, and the Atom chip. I suppose since Windows is a licensed product, Asus had to cut corners to keep the price the same...hence the 4 less gigs on the Windows version. I'm hoping the redesign will look at least as good as the MSI Wind.
 
I hope people dump their used 7" models in droves once the 8.9" comes out. I just want a 4G model to play and the price is too high new.


 
I didn't really want to wait for the 900 models after thinking about it... There's no guarantee that the launch models will be Atoms, as in different interviews people have speculated that they might decide to roll out with the Atoms in the second revision or whatever.

Plus I don't really want to spend $500 on a second pc, when I'm only going to be using it for SNES roms and light browsing. Hey stangdude22, do you use a controller with your EEE? I have an Xbox 360 controller, but I probably need to get the drivers for it to make it work...
 
Well if snes emulation is your main purpose, then you cant go wrong with the current eeepc. I got zsnes running on the default xandros today and it runs awesome in fullscreen.
 
I haven't tried zsnes, but some mame games run choppy on the EEE at 900mhz using the latest mameuifx.

For example, Donkey Kong (1981) is definitely slower than normal on the EEE :(.

What the heck are you on? I'm playing N64 games with no slowdown on my EEE.

Hook it up to an HDTV with a VGA cable and kick back with a USB>N64 Controller and play some Ocarina of Time or Mario Kart 64.
 
No, I dont have a controller yet, its been ordered. Should be here soon. All my roms play smooth, albeit with coppy sound. Still trying to fine tune it.

I saw one of these in person yesterday and i really love it now.
This may have already been posted, but when/will there be a 10" LCD model released?

There's an 8.9" coming out in the next few months, with a larger SSD and higher resolution, bigger trackpad... that's about it though.

It's bigger by like .5"... Still relatively the same size...

I'm waiting to see what HP and Acer cook up... I'm hoping for higher resolution than 1024 x 600 ... atleast 1280 x 800 or similar so I can play my 720p HD rips :D

I sold my 7" G Surf... wasn't using it enough...

More info up there, I think it's supposed to be $500 MSRP... I'd get the 12GB version and install my own XP on it, get 4 more gigs :D!

Depends on what MSI, Acer, HP have to offer though honestly, I want competition... more options, better features, lower prices all around. :)
 
I'd like to see what others do, although, I will say that Asus tends to have more stylish laptops than MSI or HP (if that's a concern).
 
I'm a budget kind of guy, I want the most performance/features for the price... aka buying a Soyo 24" monitor for $300 instead of a Dell for $600... Picture quality is within 90% of the Dell easily... and I'm able to buy a 2nd one for the same price I would have spent on a Dell... it's ugly, 1yr warranty, and other quirks... but it's budget...

Same goes for a small laptop, I'm hoping to not break $500, I'd prefer SSD and use small 2.5" external drive to hold media files... power off the USB hub... decent keyboard (I hit over 100wpm on some typing tests on the Eee so it really wasn't that much of a problem)

The perfect small laptop to me, would be 10" screen, it'd only be slightly bigger than the current Eee, maybe 3/4 of an inch wider, bigger keyboard, bigger trackpad, 12-16GB SSD, 1280 x 800 screen, 3-4 USB ports... SDHC or CF card slot 10/100 internet (Gigabit... even better)... and keep it @ $500-550 :)

I was thinking exactly the same thing.... I suppose XP is there for people less tech savvy. For most of us on this forum, we'd probably get the 12 gig and just wipe out Xandros in favor of XP.

The MSI Wind does look pretty though, but comes with a heftier price tag. 500ish starting without an SSD. 8.2 inch to 10 inch screens though. The Wind looks like a fat version of the Macbook Air...has those rounded edges.

Outputting at 720p to my HDTV using the newest mameuifx. Tried it with the standard mame and a frontend, and had the same issue. It's not unplayable...it's just not real speed (and with Donkey Kong, you can tell exactly when it's not playing real speed).

I have no idea why it's not working right because I played TMNT and it seemed to play ok...just not donkey kong :(.
 
I had problems with Project 64 at first aswell, go to eeeuser.com there is a windows gaming section. Someone put some good instructions up for emulators and it worked well with mine. I also OC to 900Mhz to game.
 
I've seen some posts around the internet of users installing trimmed down versions of Windows XP... probably around 215 mb of install space. Definitely sounds interesting.

and don't forget you can compress the larger folders inside the windows folder to gain some more space. i'm still waiting for SP3 to come out so i can do a new nlite install. i already have RC2 running just fine tho.

i had it installed. some games run like molasses and there isn't any other way to put it lol. goldeneye runs like crap in some levels which made me a VERY sad panda. bout the only two games i enjoyed playing were mario kart and mario 64. everything else just kinda blew. i might as well just get a DS if i wanna play some n64 games at a good framerate on a small screen lol.

first game i EVER played was wolf3d. i had a windows version somewhere. i can't find it though. i loved that game so much. i've been a wolfenstein fan all my life because of it.

I'll have to check it out and see if there are any tweaks to get mame working faster.
 
does anyone have an idea of how many percent or some other figure faster the new processor will be in the 900? Or what it compares to? I hope its a decent speed...

Also, what does he mean by new york design?

This is the only benchmark on the Atom I know of so far. This is only a single-threaded test, so we'll get a better idea of how it stacks up when more benchmarks are run.

That's not very encouraging. Granted the power consumption is probably lower.
 
Still. I find it a tad slow as it is.

I was hoping the new cpu would be faster. Consumption should be a nice amount lower since the screens will be bigger and the life of bat will be very similar as they are now.

I like my EPC and wass waiting for the newer ones but, as kirby said, this is a bit discouraging. :(


Edit:

The EPC should be 1.8 so should be a tad closer to the Celyon the EPC currently. It also has HT which should help it in other areas. Hmmm.

Side note - the TDP is very nice > No fan?
 
HT would be nice. I'd probably pick one of the new ones up just for the bigger screen and HT.

I understand the EEE isn't for CPU intensive tasks, but I'd like it more if it didn't bog down every once in a while ;). I have to keep remembering why I got it.

YEa. Running WMP and surfing seems to slow it down a bit. Runnning Skype and surfing also slows it a bit.

I know it isn't supposed to be a beast but sheesh...
