Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag

As the kids say, Ubisoft understood the assignment.
Glad they realized there was no room for lazy remasters for this game

Not really. Recruiting crew members, going on what will likely be pointless side stories to get abilities just takes away from the cohesive story. There are new narrative quest lines apparently, but again, that may take away from the sense of adventure and purpose and push it more towards a bunch of quest checklists. I think the new narrative quest lines can be good if they are short but ultimately if they have little to do with the main story it just dilutes the experience. I'd be more worried about the crew recruiting as that seems like a major time waster with no real benefit.

Apparently this comes out in July. Surprisingly little storage space required. Graphically it looks good enough but I am assuming this is not the latest engine build. Looks more like the older AC Mirage engine and not the newer version used in Shadows.

Never played any of these games, but this has always been something I have thought I would enjoy. But having waited for so many years I can wait until it's on sale.

No rpg character progression?

This is going to feel… dated. Like the Oblivion remaster.

I loved the Oblivion remaster. For about one hour. And then I thought, this is just… boring. Too basic. Twenty years ago - sure. But it’s 2026 now.

The combat looks like it's borrowing from Shadows, which I'm fine with. As much as I like Odyssey and Valhalla, they lean hard into special attacks. To the point that you're mostly killing time while those abilities recharge.

For what it's worth, I feel like "RPG mechanics" = one of the strangest definitions in all of gaming. Most of the time it just means a skill tree. It doesn't really have anything to do with playing a role in most context.

So wait… the internet is happy? What?
Did ubisoft change leadership or something? I'm kind of surprised this project even exists. Hopefully they do AC 2 next. Blizzard's leadership change seems t o potentially already be paying dividends with the Warlock class for D2:R, and the complete re-work of D4 for the new expansion. These companies hang on to really awful people at the top for too long, that or things get stale.

I think the internet is happy because the original game was beloved and the remake isn't hot buttered trash. It's still a remake with a shitload of existing assets they can repurpose and sell again for full price. They aren't exactly doing us all some kind of massive favor. They basically threw a pass in the general direction of a wide-open receiver.

This one might be pretty good. Since this requires UBI launcher why would someone buy it on steam instead of ubi site ?

I just sub for a month of Ubisoft+ or whatever it's called whenever there's a new AC.

You get it day 1 for like $15 and have a month to get your fill

I'm going to take a wait and see approach to buying the remake since Ubisoft has dragged their brand into the mud, tarred and feathered it, lit it on fire and then flushed it into an overflowing septic tank.

From memory I think I played the original with 3xGTX480 on a 1080p projector or a 1440p qnix/catleap depending on the time of day. Probably my favourite AC. The Australian dollar was at an all time high around 2010-2012 so importing hardware was so cheap.

Always the correct answer. I mean, in the day and age of digital distribution you never need to worry about games running out, this isn't the 90s where if you didn't buy a hot game early enough you could be waiting for months for a restock. You can literally buy it at 3am sitting around in your jammies and download it then and there.

For Ubisoft it is extra super mega the correct answer as they have fucked many things up many times. Just because it looks good on a first look doesn't mean there isn't some major issues hiding. No reason to rush in, let the reviews come in, see if there's any gotchas, then buy it if it still sounds good.

yeah, im not biting till i see reviews and it comes down in price or they offer us a discount for owning the og.

I mean it looks like it could be good... but it is Ubisoft. They are great at fucking things up. I'm interested, but not getting my hops up until it is released and there has been testing and reviews.

Ubisoft buried a chest with $500,000 worth of gold and crystals somewhere in the Caribbean

Ubisoft has teamed up with the “leading treasure hunt” company Unsolved Hunts to produce Gold & Crystal – The Lost Treasure of Edward Kenway; a scavenger hunt that will require you to solve fifteen riddles and then physically travel to somewhere in the Caribbean to dig up a literal treasure chest containing “pure gold coins” and a rock crystal skull adorned with an opal, worth roughly $500,000

to get in on the action, you have to pay a minimum of $40, but you can pay up to $230 to get some extra goodies, like a notebook and a board game...
