hello,

recently bought a new pc,

intel p4 3.2
1024 ddr ram
36gb 10k S-ATA
250gb 7200 S-ATA
AIW 9800pro 128
430w psu

at first it wouldnt boot due to the fact that i didnt have any working OS cds, so i went and bought a brand new winxp cd..

installed the OS fine, installed all the drivers and 1 game.. played for 6hours went to bed.
the next day i played for 3hours and got a major crash. tried to check the debugger files in the game folder to see what happened and it told me windows couldnt not find dll whatever for notepad.. then tried to go on the internet and internet explorer keep crashing too.. so i rebooted and when it saw the winxp flashscreen it rebooted again and went into this boot loop..

i reformated and tried to install (my brand new winxp cd) and it gives me error for about 40% of the files i try to install.. tells me "file could not be copied over please make sure your windows xp cd is in your cd-rom drive or the cd could be damage"

i then tried to install winxp on a older pc and it worked fine :(

im kinda lost here, any insight would be appreciated.

thanks

oop.
go to the hard drive manufacturer's site and download their diagnostics and see if you can get them to run on the hard drive- sounds like an issue there.
double check all connections.

First download and then run Memtest86 off a floppy or bootable CD.
Do you get errors ?

In the bios is it possible to check your temps & voltages.
If so are they ok ?

Are you connected to the internet and have you got an anti-virus program & firewall installed ?

Three reasons a new install could crash.

Luck.......:D

Try another optical drive. See it all the time doing reinstalls on old Dells. The cheap CD-ROMs don't read well after 3+ years.

A friend of mine had a very similar problem. I looked at his PC and spent ages trying to figure it out. New cdrom, new hard drive, memory etc. Nothing worked.

In the end he just took it back and got a new one. Personally I concluded it was a faulty motherboard. the motherboard ultimately controls I/O operations and so it's no surprise that if it screws up, you get file errors.

But yeah, at first you'd think it was the hard drive/cdrom/cables etc.

So basically, bad news. Could well be the mobo...

I have had problems similar to these in the past..hhehe I just had a very similar problem putting a system together for some1 this past weekend. First please post the full specs of the new system..what type of mem? mobo and so on.

Try these steps also:
1) Use some diagnostic software to check if your HDD is working properly
2) Use Memtest to see if the mem is working properly
2a) Make sure the memory is in the right dimms (sometimes instead of starting with DIMM 1, some mobos prefer u start at the end, so read the manual and the manual on the CD more importantly. If you have to try 1 Dimm at a time and see what happens
3) Reset the CMOS and make sure you only have on there what u use, and dont tweak ne settings that u might have done, also check that the cpu u have installed is the correct CPU displayed in BIOS.
4) take nething u have installed (audio card, video card (only if your mobo has onboard video) and nething else).

Generally these steps help me out and the system works itself out, but maybe some1 here has some other ideas that might work even better with less work :D
