Another Vista install problem thread

As the title says, I'm having Vista install problems. Note: I am trying to do an upgrade, and that may be where my problem lies, but for now, I don't want to do a clean install. So, I put my Vista disc in, and start the installation process.

I choose the Upgrade option, as I said before, and it goes all the way through, even up to the "Completing Upgrade" step (the last one). Now, I'm not sure exactly if that even completed, since I decided to take a shower at that point and let the installer do its thing, but the first thing I see when I come back is the Windows Boot options screen (Safe Mode, Last Known Good Configuration, etc), with a message saying that there is a problem with my Vista installation; please insert the install disc and choose the Repair option. Not willing to believe that, I restart and try to boot into Vista. My system reboots about 3 seconds after the green progress bar thing starts going. I tried repairing; I let that sit for about an hour, and the text on the screen never changed from "Searching for Problems". I plan to try the upgrade again and watch everything that happens, but has anyone else had a similar problem? Could this be a problem with my XP installation (assuming the Vista install completed as it should have)? Is my Vista disc somehow corrupt? At this point, I'm not all that pissed, since there's really no reason to upgrade to Vista yet, and I didn't buy the copy I was trying to install (the trial version I got at the Brand New Day Microsoft event), but I am starting to worry if the only way I'll ever be able to install Vista is with a clean install (and I hate the week-long process of trying to get your setup back to normal, not to mention compatibility problems that might arise from the upgrade).
 
Not sure if this helps but....

I just read in the March 2007 issue of Maximum PC that the repair option can be run a maximum of 5 times. Each "pass" will look at a different issue it can possibly repair. If it fails on one, proceed to the next.

So, if you have run this through once, you have four more chances.
 
Good to know. Oh, and "maximum of 5 times"? I hope that's per installation attempt...

I am having this EXACT same issue... i picked up a vista ultimate OEM disk at a local vendor (legal pressed copy) and tried to upgrade my XP to vista... it went through and finished the setup, it restarted, showed me the green scrollie thingie, then restarted again... when it restarted i get the "we are sorry our software sucks" menu asking me to go into safe mode... ive tried regular mode safe mode etc, that just restarts again after showing the green scrollie thing... i am doing a repair right now and its said "searching for problems" for the last hour and a half
 
Upgrade installs may be more improved now, but they still don't take the place if doing a clean install. You may see it as time consuming to re-install your software, but see it as a chance to make sure everything is done right, and no traces of the old OS are left. I'm a firm believer of using best practices the first time, and giving your new system/OS a fresh new install.
 
It could very well be a driver or a software problem. Did you remove any anti-virus apps before you started the upgrade? :D
 
Sounds like a driver issue, I couldn't tell you what, but does Vista have a step-by-step boot method? You could tell from there where it's failing.
 
I did an upgrade on my i9300, fully expecting to have it fail and do a clean install afterwards, but before it finished, it identifies problem applications and asked me to remove them before continuing and it went through fine. Pretty happy with it. Most likely you have a driver issue like was mentioned. I would check on another machine and gather as many Vista drivers as you can and install them while in safe mode if you can or keep the drivers on the drive as you run more passes of the repair problem. I had One problem with my dual boot about 3 months ago where my Raid 5 drive broke and I mixed up the drives when I put it back and couldn't do a repair so I wiped it and went 64 bit. Been running like a dream for over a month now.

I removed all the applications that the vista advisor said would cause an issue (mostly XP power toys and some other network utilities etc...)

and yes i removed my anti-virus (sophos)

install them in XP safe mode?

i cant get into vista safe mode so i couldent do it that way...

the specs of the machine i am trying to upgrade is

ASUS p5nd-2
Dual core p4 3ghz
geforce 7950
80gb raptor

i pulled all the other hardware out of the machine before/during/after the upgrade (my sound card and usb devices etc etc)

i really dont want to do a clean install becuase i have a bad habit of loosing cd cases and such and i dont know where half of my game's serial numbers are (things like bf2142 etc) and i would really rather not buy them again :(
