This Forum like most others has two OS sections, One for Windows, the other for *nix

1: Most threads in the Windows sections are generally one of two things either "why is my XP broken", or "how can I make Vista work"

2: Most threads in the *nixsection are generally one of two things either "how can I do this or that" or "Hey look what just got released"

Those are the four big ones. I think it is very telling. What do you guys think?

I think you're not taking into consideration the type of people who use Linux vs Windows.

oh shit, I didn't realize that duby had posted this. damn I retract my previous statement since it won't make a damn bit of difference. And I will try my honest-to-God best to stay out of this thread from now on.

Now I'm not one to join the battle. I'm not taking sides, but....

Something being broken implies that it did work once. "How can I do this?" implies that it never worked in the first place.

You'd need to clarify a bit more as IMO your overgeneralizing thread categories and you haven't even posted your own "thoughts" on what is so "telling".

Fair enough.

I dont think it's overgeneralized. It is what it is. Poeple come in here and ask questions that are pretty damn close to what I said above, give or take a few words, and that is the vast majority of them.

What I think is telling, is that those questions peple ask in the windows Forum tendo to suggest that it doesnt work well, those questions in the Linux forum tend to suggest that people are trying to learn something new, or trying to share information with people.

Not at all my friend, It suggests they dont know how to do it, and they are asking for help... Exactly what the questions ays, and that is the majority of the questions we get in the linux forum.

For example.... Hey guys I want to Set up a LAMP server, Can you point me in the right direction?

In windows it's more like this.... Hey guys, My server crashed, and I am getting a blue screen, can you help me fix it?

Are you trying to say Windows doesn't work well and comparing that to users trying to learn something in Linux? How are your even comparing two unrelated types of "questions" with a common frame of reference? What is the point of even trying to compare the two?

I get the impression (after reading a linux thread you participated in) is that your somehow trying to make a comparison of Linux vs Windows on a basis of the content of these forum threads.

Whatever your intentions are, it is very clear from that linux thread you obviously favor linux far more superior than Windows and as such, you obviously have a very "narrow" category view of the threads in either forum.

Unless you can provide an unbiased statistical analysis of both forum threads that go back a few pages, your "observation" is flawed based on your own personal bias.

Please get to the point if you have one to make.

The point was made very clearly in the title. It's just a very interesting observation. I'm not comparing anything. I just simply made an observation about the types of threads in the two OS forums.

Based on those observations I made some opinions. Which is fair. My opinion is that based on the types of questions asked in the windows forum, windows clearly doesnt work very well. My opinion based on the observations I've made from the types of questions asked in the Linux forum is that people are generally asking help on how to do something or another, or contributing to knowledge in some way.

I'm not comparing anything. I'm making an observation, and forming an opinion based on those facts observed. I thought I'd share it will ya'll. It's fair After all opinions are like assholes.... Everybody's got one and everybody you to see it.

This is exactly why I can't talk about religion at work.

Anyway, there are qualified people on both sides of the fence with similar and dissimilar problems. And as [H]ard as this site may be, there is a great cross section of humanity here on this forum which is a small slice of the whole community.

I agree, it is what it is. A thread that some grow tired of reading after page two, and some type it out till the end.

I :D Overclockix

Observing two things and making an opinion is a comparison.

Your agenda is very clear given your history on this forum. Your an avid MS hater and try to spread your anti-Windows FUD at every chance you get.

Again I ask. Did you take into consideration the types of people who use Windows vs those who use Linux?

Level of agreement 100%

OS zealots are idiots. It's like arguing whether wrenches or screwdrivers are better tools, when it's obvious that you just use the best tool to do the job at hand.

I'm a Windows user who likes linux, but can't get F@H to run on it. Should I be offended?

P.S. Windows is capitalized because it is a brand name. Should linux be capitalized considering it is a category? Or do we consider it kernel? Should kernels be capitalized?

Thats why its best to have an engineer spec out a bolt with a slot in it.

Since when did an opinion become synonymous with a comparison?

I dont hate MS, I just choose to use something that suites my needs better.

Take into consideration the people who post on this forum. You have to realize that this is not AOL. This is the [H].... I realize that this is a very narrow scope. I understand that and I dont argue against it, but most of these guys that post here deserve the benefit of the doubt. I refuse to call these folks stupid windows users. I will not be drawn in by you FUD. Most guys here at the very least have an interest in how things work. And at the most are experts in the respective fields. After all that is most likely why they were drawn to the [H] in the first place.

Be offended if you like. If that's what makes you happy. I was being speaking in very general terms. I capitalized Linux because it is the proper name of a priduct whether or not it's trademarked or registered. But don't hold me to that because an not perfect with grammar.

The [H[ has an extremely wide range of people and skill levels who make up it's membership. Oh and don't put words into my mouth. I've never called anyone stupid.

But in general a person who chooses to use Linux is more than capable of basic search skills and is able to figure out any problems they have on there own. While a great many people in the Windows community are stumped by the simplist problems and need someone to help them out.

Ok, I'm offended ;) .

I declare capital war on all kernels.

To the OP, I'm sorry. I'm trying to defend you with humor without actually being on your side. I'll stop now.

That's a pathetic comment.

Example:

My car is Scarlet-colored. My truck is Maroon-colored. That's an observation.

My truck is more red than my car. That's a comparison.

This is not:

it probably means that doing stuff is easier in windows for users who have used windows for a long time and that given that most every desktop is a windows desktop people have problems with it.

Let's say that 0.01% of all windows installs develop some weird problem. With 800 million installs, that means we have 80k installs with a problem.

Let say that 2% of all Linux installs develop a problem. With 2 Million Linux installs, we have 40k installs with a problem.

So while it would appear that there are less problems with Linux installs, there is in fact a larger share of linux installs with problems.
Of course my numbers are complete and utter rubbish, but making generalizations about what Linux and Windows "are like" based on the extremely small sample size which is threads in the [H]ardForums' OS forum that Duby229 has looked at, is just about as productive and accurate.

All of them are computer users in some way with an Interest is hardware,or gaming in some way. After all the site is named [H]ardOCP for a reason. People who are interested in dogs visit dog sites. People who are interested in computer technology visit computer sites. It's that simple. It all comes down to demographics.

Barely. He never stated that Windows users run into more problems than Linux users, and he did not state that Windows users don't learn and share new knowledge less than Linux users.

I'd be interested in seeing industry wide data on the actual number of problems with the two. Maybe I'll take the time to look it up. I'm sure somebody has done it already.

The point I was trying to make earlier was that Windows is great, it works right out of the box with 2 hours worth of downloads, then has problems.

And Linux is great, it works right out of the download with .5 hours of downloads, then it dosent break, but your soundcard dosen't work.

You're comparing grapes to limabeans. Two different problems. Bashing aside, will Linux ever be able to work with all types of hardware and have easy app installations. Cuz thats what it needs to compete.

But Duby's sound card works great. He only buys Linux compatible hardware.

Listen I havent bashed windows once in this thread. The only one doing any bashing is you bashing me. I dont know what this fascination with me is, but please stop. Your starting to scare me a little.

Yeah, I used MSN to find out where you live just now. I'm coming over tonight watch for me in your windows. :D

and please note that I didn't realize that you were the one that started this thread until later. I saw someone had an interesting observation and I wanted to know what it was, so I clicked and posted my opinion. It wasn't until just before my second post in this thread that I realize you were the OP.

Exactly. Linux isnt perfect. It doesnt support every device out there. We all know this, and we need to plan our hardware accordingly. If you dont, then it is not Linux faul, it's your own short sight.

But that is off topic. Lets not get into a hardware debate.

Cool. ;) I'll keep the shower on for you. mist the air with fabreeze..... maybe I'll even put on a little marvin.... Then we can have some real fun... See ya soon honey.

I'll shower before I leave, and I'm allergic to Fabrese (however that's spelled). But Marvin's cool with me. Want me to pick up something to eat on the way over?

Nah I got some booze here. Dont want to fill my belly up before hand... You know that can get quite nasty before the end of the night if you eat first. you know what I mean... :D

So, do you ski or snowboard?

I ski. Have for 30 years.

I hated snowboarders for a long time. Those snotty little fuckers were messing up my mountian. No respect for the industry that alllowed them to enjoy their sport, what with thier baggy cloths and long hair.

But, over time, everyone learned how to get along, and "share the mountian".

And I learned how to snowbaord a few years ago. Everyone told me that it would be easy, after all, I've been skiing for a long time, I should pick it up no problem.

What a bunch of bullshit. But, try it with an open mind, and you never know. Boarding is fun, but it hurts.

Windows users and *nix users have to accept the fact that they are two different things that happen to need the same "mountain". The means are different, but the ends are the same, get down the mountain anfd have fun. You may like one or the other, and you may like both, and the fact is that the world will be a better place once you all decide to stop acting like one is better than the other.

Now, maybe that's all a little idaelistic, but it can happen.

By the way, I love Vista and Suse is the shit.

[Been using Vista as my primary OS for a few weeks now. Also used Fedora for a while as my Linux of choice. However I figured since I was wiping out my XP partition (since I don't ever boot into it) I'd also try a different flavor of Linux and give it more hard drive space. Downloaded Ubuntu, and I hate it. going back to Fedora.

Ubuntu tries to be too controlling. What the hell is up with them forcing sudo down our throats. I like being able to su root. It's easier. Sure it may not be as secure, but hell, I'll take the risk.

Nope, :D I pretty much have a one track mind. I'm a computer addict. :D This is what I do all day. Sit in fron of the computer pecking away. Tha's about it.

For example right now I'm trying to set up a video streaming server so that I can watch my stuff while I'm pecking away at work. Yep that is my life. About 16 hours a day. every single day.

I guess now that I think about it, it's kinda sad really.
