navy man seeks help. Have one week to find a power book 15in to run the program called shake. Has no clue were to buy one cheap. Just shake will be on the laptop no games. NO games.

Need to know

*were to buy PB
*ram
*7200RPM hard disk
*OSX or OS manual's like a OSX power book
*what is OSX?

I am runing shake 2.5 on windows. I know PC's and would like web pages for the mac power book that give tips and tricks.

I leave for sea in just two weeks. so I need to be able to overnight ship it or go pick it up in mayport FL...since thats were I am at

what do you think I should do?

I know I know. I build my own computer's and what not. I know windows XP PRO and how to tweak it. I know my way around windows.

How ever I need to know were I can buy OSX books so I can learn. I do not know any thing about OSX. which is why I asked for books. I also need to buy a new hard drive for the laptop. 5400 is slow I want a 7200 RPM one. but were to buy one?

I have more questions.

Well, take heart in that OSX is something that you don't need to spend time learning in order to be functional with your new laptop. Everything you would ever need to access is very well organized to the point where I often find myself "guessing" where what I'm looking for is the first time through.

If you are really looking to get familiar with the under-the-hood stuff though, I think the first question would be "how familiar are you with a *nix environment?" If you are not at all familiar with the general unix command line navigation and functions, you would probably be best served with an "intro to unix" type of book so that you can at the very least get around and explore some of the basics.

Once you've got that out of the way, then you might be at a point where you are ready to get into the OSX specific stuff. I'm just hitting that point myself, so I'm probably not the best to suggest any specific books.
 
no no plz name the books of. I have never worked with unix before so I guess for now I need just the basic. I would like to know if you can partition the hard disk tho. for Video encodeing. I might be able to to buy it the day after tomorrow. so we will see. I do not have a car with me so online might be the way to go...but we will see.

i think hes prolly looking for something more like "osx for dummies." it doesnt seem like he wants to start tweaking stuff right away, just learn the os, and how to be functional with the powerbook.

partitioning is easy osx's disk utility will do that for you.

You can get a book like that at any bookstore (barnes+nobel, bookamillion, etc). You might do well to pick up a basic unix book at the same time.

You can search http://www.newegg.com/ for laptop HDDs that match your prefs. You're gonna have to get a profesional to install this for you, though, or order the laptop directly from Apple with the speedier HDD.
 
yeah, apple stores will have them, borders, barns and noble, any bookstore, most computer/tech stores have books like comp usa etc. books are easy to find. grab a couple though i doubt youll need any. if you know your way around windows, you can find your way around the mac os in just a couple days. ive never had a mac book, and i figure im pretty good with it.

you can also check out the mac hints at apple.com. these are the things i find useful. shows you how to manage a lot of the "annoying" things some people find.

if you happen to buy tonight- get the 1.5ghz 15"er with the UPGRADED (128MB) video card. most likely be what you're looking for.

or wait until tomorrow to see what kind of cool shit they release.
