Adobe PDF Reader install issues, Vista?

I hardly ever use the PDF file format, but last night i had to open one to see my tax information (woo hoo! Tax return!) So i decided to install Adobe Reader. Well it wont work...it trys to install but it results in an error that tell me the Temp folder is full or i have to have proper write permissions. Now, im running as an Admin on vista and i have no issues installing anything. I decided to try out Foxit Reader just to get my pdf file open. It worked! No issues or anything, but it only opens some pdf files and not all of them. My best bet is to have Adobe Reader installed, besides, the GUI is alot better :) . Anyone have a solution to this? Thx in advance!
 
Ok, so i found some information on how to get it installed. It appears the Adobe Reader install path is invalid in Vista due to the folder scheme change in the MSI. Heres what i found so far....i havent tried it as im at work, but once i get home ill play with it.


"If anyone has this problem what you do is extract the actual MSI by going to start > run > enter in "%UserProfile%\Desktop\AdbeRdr80_en_US.exe" -nos_ne

then let that run, after its done go start > run > enter in %appdata%, you might have to push the back button after you do this to find the folder locallow, then go to the folder netopsystems > temp > copy and paste the Adobe Reader 8.0 folder to your desktop. Don't run the Setup, because that doens't work, just run the AcroRead

Interesting. I downloaded AcroReader 8 and it installed on Ultimate with no issues or errors.

I wonder if they updated something in the installer, and I got a newer version..

Really? Wow, i cannot install it for the life of me! Did you do an upgrade from XP to Vista? I happen to do a clean install. It looks like the installer itself is looking for a directory to uncompress the files, but that directory is no longer in the Windows folder scheme. Im gonna have a looksy when i get home. i must get this resolved. Funny how life plays tricks on me. Never used PDF or anything like it, no need. But now that i have some money coming to me, i have issues with it. :)
 
All I did was google Acrobat 8 Vista Install and many many useful web pages came up, the first one fixed the install issue in 2 minutes.
 
It was a clean install of Ultimate Full to a second partition, leaving XP intact.

If you haven't got it installed yet, try this:

In Windows Explorer, right click on the install program and set the compatibility mode to XP SP2.

Then right click it again and run as administrator.

This should work and is much less trouble than some of the other methods suggested.

The OP tried it...still wants Adobe installed. I never really liked Foxit that much, to be honest, but that's just an opinion. I had some trouble opening some documents correctly.
 
Clean install of Ultimate to seperate partition. No issue with installation or use of Acrobat 8.

Back on topic, i did install Foxit and it was nice at first, then it started opening only some pdf files. hence why i want to use Adobe's.
 
That's the problem I had with it. Random ones refused to open. I also had some odd printing issues, where some would lose their formatting.
 
I had the exact same issue...I didn't think to try the XP compatibility mode so I went and searched for the temp file directory it had extracted to and ran the setup executable from there.

I was using an old Adobe 5.0 I kept around because I hate the automatic updates (I hate these things just on principle) but I think it's less intrusive now, and PDFs in 5.0 kept giving me error messages....

I have no idea why Adobe has to package their installer inside another installer.
 
Your having this problem because you want to install Acrobat 8 but you have turned off UAC, turn it back on, reboot and then install acrobat. Then you can turn it off once you have it installed. This is a known bug.
