Adding a temp sensor that can be read by the PC

Hi,

I am interested in adding a temp sensor / thermistor onto my pc so I can read it using MBM. I have several LCD's that I can display the temps on. What I would like to do is have several sensors in various positions (waterblock, socket, vid card, etc..). I did find a way to do this using an external game port and several thermistors. Unfortunately, my mobo doesn't have a game port so I am wondering if anyone has an alternate way of doing this with perhaps an add on PCI card or some other trick.
 
Bst bet would be to find a pci card with the plug you need as mbm might not support other ones.
 
does your motherboard have a SMBus port on it anywere?
 
you could use a prototyping PCI board and use an LM63 on it. Look up the data sheet from National Semiconductor. The circuit is really easy, and it's also the same temp monitor found on ATI's 9600xt cards. It uses the SMBus. I'm not sure if MBM can read it though, but I think Speedfan could. I'm sure if enough people showed interest in it, the author of MBM would probably add support in for it.
 
smbus would probably be the easiest way to do it. There are smbus temp sensors that you just wire up and that's it.
 
Oh interesting.. thanks for that idea I have a unused gameport header.

Is it standardized though? I dont have the connector and my mobo manual just shows a stupid 16x2 square with numbers but no data!!! :mad: thanks DFI.
