AD End User Issue

I get this:

EDIT: changed dhcp to hand ip of server out for dns server, not isp & server
 
is the <domain name> the FQDN? domain.local?

if so do an nslookup now and see what happens.
 
nslookup by name:

It appears there is deffinatly something wrong with your DNS server. It looks like when you connect to the dnbs server it not even responding to DNS queries. Could you post a screenshot of ytour dns setup?
 
Is home a sub domain of edu-prize.com. is edu-prize.com a public registered domain? did you crate these dns zones yourself or let the DCPRMO wizard do it for you?



1. Create a reverse lookup zone.

no its not. thats why we have situations like these. everyone thinks they can admin a window server.

right-click. new zone. follow the wizard.


Is your froward zone and AD intergrated zone?

Is your home.edu-prize.com and public registered domain?

Look at _msdcs under home.edu-prize.com in the screenshot, it's greyed out, meaning that DNS is definitely fucked up.

Then look up top, the _msdcs.home.edu-prize.com can't be a valid DNS zone, I'm sure.

I'd use a silver bullet.
 
The forward lookup zone is active directory integrated and no home.edu-prize.com is not a public domain, local only.

Set up a reverse lookup zone but that didn't solve anything.

ok,

everything said in this quote is wrong. it all looks normal to me. check your _tcp under home.edu-prize.com. it should contain the srv records like this....

I have all the SRV records, and all zones are active directory integrated.

home.edu-prize.com is not a public domain, it's only used onsite.


EDIT: I get different nslookup messages now:

by name:
server: edu-server2.home.edu-prize.com
address: ip

*** edu-server2 can't find nslookup: non-existant domain

by ip:
server: [ ip ]
address: ip

*** ip can't find nslookup: non-existant domain
 
Not that I think it's the issue, but have you made sure any helper addresses on the routers are set to the right DHCP/DNS addresses?
 
ok. do an nslookup.

then type in your server hostname. Then try it by FQDN(server.domain.com).

Hmm, this is what mine here at work looks like.

This is an upgraded NT to 2k to 2k3 domain. Does DNS do it differently in a freshly installed 2k3 environment, or does this change when it's 2k3 native mode?

I have no useful suggestions.

ok thats looks good. If that was from a workstation then reboot the pc and see if your problems go away.

WHOOT. I knew it would.

Ya know thats like 30 mins tops troubleshooting onsite. its so hard to troubleshoot over the internet =). In the future i would just let the DCPROMO wizard handle the intital DNS config for you. When you run it it will see no DNS is setup and ask you the question and configures it for you. Then you can tweak it if you need to. DNS sounds like a simple concept but its the root of a lot of problems in an AD invironment.
 
Mental note for the next time I walk into a crappily done active directory site. :D

I wish I could have started this from scratch. :(
