Hi,

I'm trying to solve a problem, I came down this morning to find the computer was still powered up but there was no video and couldn't bring it back from power saving mode.

Restarted the system and the video stayed blank and one of the DVD drive units activity lights was lit up and stayed on. Neither drives would eject if the button was pushed. The green light is lit on the motherboard and all the fans spin up when I start the system. I'm not getting any beep code errors.

I've disabled the power to the two CD units and no luck, disconnected the two hard drives from the SATA connecters and nothing. Finally I tried to reset the BIOS by following the instructions in the manual but I still can't get any response.

I'm running the current BIOS with an eVGA 7950GT.

Any help would be great.

Was there a power surge in the middle of the night? Any physical damage on the board (burn marks)?

No, but it's a brand new Thermaltake unit. It was nicely on spec when I first installed it. System has been in the new case for the last two weeks.

Ok, too strange. Finally got to start seriously troubleshooting. First thing was disconnect the IDE cables and try to start it up....fired right up. So even though they weren't powered the DVD drives were somehow locking the system up...

thanks for the help

Are they set properly to master/slave based on the cable? That will cause lockups with some boards/drives.

Yep, think so. Both master on separate channels and it's been fine from the the build. May go back to cable select and see if that makes a difference.

Keep the drives at master and slave but do not plug them in.

Unplug the power cord from the power supply, leave the drives disconnected and perform a CMOS clear. Once you have done that, plug the power cord back into the PSU and then power on the system with only the HDs connected.

Think the board is going. Came down this morning and the it wouldn't come back from power saving mode and a push of the reset button on the case didn't do anything. Powered down and back up and it's fine...seen this before on a Shuttle box, eventually even the power off didn't work....gonna contact Asus and try to get the board replaced.
