A8N-E HD controller problem ?

I have been running the above mobo with 3 PATA drives for a month now with no issues.

System is

A8N-E rev2
A64 3500
1024MB ram
samsung sp1203n HD
samsung sp0802n HD
maxtor Diamondmax 10 200GB PATA
X800Xl graphics

I have just bought a Maxtor Diamondmax 10 200gb SATA drive. I tried to install windows on it. When the installation program ran it could not create a partition on the drive to install windows onto. I disconnected the PATA drives and it then worked. This pattern is repeated all the way through set up.

If I do an install of windows with out the other hard drives attached to the system it works, the moment I install the PATA drives (with all my data on) the system starts going to pot and has 3 times ended up in a state where windows could not load up properly. If i put my original system HD back in the system and use the SATA drive as a data disk I still encounter strange problems with windows.

Does anyone have a clue what’s going on ??

Maybe for some reason a bootloader from one of the other drives is causing an issue?
Have you updated to the latest BIOS?

I got the same MB right now, and I'm running a WD 60gb laptop HD but that'll change because I think the HD is bad (extremely laggy even trying to scroll through the start menu, and it clicks often during accessing), and I'll end up with a SATA drive that I'll be booting from.

I can tell you that after I installed windows on the PATA drive, I connected a 250gb WD SATA drive without any issues, but that doesn't help your situation ;)

That sounds really odd. I haven't had any such issues, but I've only use 2 different SATA drives: a Maxtor 60 gig and the WD 160 I'm currently using. Mine see's it as a regular hard drive.
Do you have the SATA drive plugged into either SATA 1 or 3? I have heard of some people having issues if their boot drive is on ports 2 or 4.

I have tried ports 1 and 4, I have also tried a different cable. I have tried different arragments of the PATA drives on the two EIDE channels as well. I am sure it should be easier than this !!

I also can't find anyone else that has had a similar problem. I really need a different SATA drive to see if its the problem. The Maxtor Maxblast diagnostic software does not work on NF4 boards !!

I have sent Ausus and Maxtor suppoert emails so hopefully they might tell me something heplfull.

I have sorted some of the problems. I used the sata/raid driver from the NF4 6.53 drivers and sorted my install problems.

The two versions of windows happly coexist.

However if I make the SATA drive the 1st boot drive the sytem then hangs with a boot disk error...ect. If i make the PATA disk the 1st disk then I get to the os sellection screen the SATA windows will Quiet happly load. For that matter so does the old install of windows ( which is what I am using now). What really does not help is that all the Maxtor diagnostic software does not work with NF4 boards.

The other thing I noticed 10 minutes ago was that the SATA drive was not appearing in the BIOS screen. I cold booted the PC and whent back into the BIOS and it was there again. weird

I think I should not have bought a Maxtor drive. But diagnostic software not working with the most popular chipset seems to be left out of reveiws.

Any Ideas on what the hell is going on would be most welcome at this point.
