I have the ASUS ZenBook UX305CA laptop which has a max resolution of 3200 x 1800.

I have it connected to a Dell UltraSharp U2715H which has a max resolution of 2560 x 1440, however…

The Dell monitor is able to display the laptop resolution of 3200 x 1800. How is that possible?
I'm no expert, but since 3200 x 1800 is a 16:9 aspect ratio, I'd assume that the screen is merely down-scaling your laptop input. Either that, or your laptop is smart enough to output a 2560 x 1440 resolution to the monitor in the first place.

The laptop display settings show that it's displaying a resolution of 3200x1800 on the external Dell U2715H. So you're saying that it's really displaying 2560x1440??
Yes. The monitor cannot show more physical pixels than it has. The only explanation is that the monitor's built in scaler is down-scaling the laptop's output.

You can use the OSD of your monitor to see what resolution it's working at. Usually the gpu scales whatever resolution you want and feeds the monitor it's native resolution, in this case the gpu would be scaling 3200x1800 into 2560x1440.

What does the monitor say? Simply use the menu to see.
