I posted this in the motherboard section, but realized it may not be a motherboard issue. I apologize for posting in 2 sections, but am putting it where i feel it would be better answered:

Ok, so I have an Abit NF7-S Rev2 board, and have had it for about 5 yrs or so. The fan on the northbridge chipset had went out, so I went today and bought a replacement. To replace the fan, I had to take the peripherals out, and remove the board from the case. I installed the new fan, and put everything back. When I put all the connections back in the PC, i then plugged in the power to the computer. The status light on the board came on, but in a matter of seconds, it dimmed and then shut off. I tried a couple of times with the same results. The computer will not power on.

The power supply was working, and everything else was fine when I had turned it off about a month ago, until I could get that fan replaced. I have double checked for pinched wires, etc. to make sure it isnt grounded out.

Any ideas?

Did you plug the power button connectors into the correct place on the mobo?

i didnt disconnect everything from the board, just enough to be able to get the board to where I could reach the backside to install the screws for the new fan. Only thing I disconnected was the video card, modem, power supply connectors to the board, and thats it. I removed all the mobo screws, pulled the board up enough to do what i had to do, then put it all back together.
I am starting to think it may be the power supply. I have removed it from the case, plugged it in, and the PS fan is not running. Not sure how else to test it?

Just checked the PS and thats not it - the mobo is shorting the PS out somehow...guess I will remove it, check, reinstall again

Well, I found a crowned and leaking capacitor on the mobo - I assume the whole thing is dead, or can this be replaced?

You can replace the capacitor. How's your soldering skills? It's pretty easy, but who knows what else may be wrong? It's a cheap fix to see if you can get it up and running.

my soldering skills are not good - I havent done it but only 1-2 times in my life. I can find someone to help me out with it though. As mentioned, could be a cheap fix.
