A few tips on mining.

I've only been mining for a few of weeks but I think I can share some of my findings about mining.

In no particular order...

1. DON'T build a mining rig from scratch. If you have spare system, say mb/cpu, memory, PS and storage. You could get say a GTX1060 to start and see how it goes. Better yet if you already have a card. The less you spend, the quickest you'll recover you investment.

2. Start slow and grow as you see fit. Don't get 8 GTX 1060s, start with one or two and see how it goes.

3. People claiming that they are earning $800 dlls a month are BULLSHIT. The guy from tweaktown claimed he was making over $800 and then over $1000 a month. That was impossible as he only started mining for about a couple of weeks at most. So those were "projected earnings" using a mining calculator. The actual earnings could be much less (and probably were since the market crashed, which take us to the next point)

4. Don't panic when the market crashes. It would seem like all your earnings are gone, but it will bounce back. Just this month the market already crashed twice. it went for less then $10 a few days ago and as of today its a little over $300. Hopefully this will scare lots of people and that means more to us. When I started ETH was around $360, so I expected to recoup what I paid for my GTX1070 in 2 to 3 months. Now I think it will probably be 4 months or so.

5. Be aware of hidden costs. Depending on where you live, you could see you power bill skyrocket once you hit certain kilowatts. Also keep in mind that the more GPUs you add, the more money you'll have to spend in MBs, risers, PS, cooling, etc.

6. Don't go extreme on OC. While its nice to get close to 35mh/s on a highly OC GTX1070, its better to get around 31~32mh/s while keeping things cooler, saving some power and not risking frying your card.

7. Don't go cheap on the PS. You could get by with a "El Cheapo"TM Power supply for gaming, but it won't stand a chance once you start mining. You not only risk frying it but also your video card, mobo, etc.

8. Less might be more. At some point it just won't be profitable to add more cards. You'll have to settle for the ammount that makes sense; as I said there are hidden costs that will eat on your profits.

9. At some point it just won't be profitable. It could take some months or even a few years, but as difficulty increases, it just won't make sense anymore.

Realize your rig is worthless for eth once November comes along and they switch from proof of work (gpu) to proof of stake.

I seep people go gung ho all the time on stuff like this and usually they loose their arse with it. Just take things slow.

Why would he have a worthless rig?

Ethereum is moving to "proof of stake," which is a different system that does not require constant number-crunching. Instead of miners doing calculations, forgers "stake" large amounts of ETH. Blocks are created by a random forger (instead of a random miner) and the forger is awarded a somewhat small amount of ETH.

This is good because it eliminates the extremely wasteful use of electricity of mining. It's bad because it takes away the ability to become a miner just by building and operating a rig, and instead favors people who have a lot of money.

Start mining something else; my vote is Verium ( $VRM ) - its GPU resistant so you its a good coin to start with.
Starting today to mine ETH is not a good decision imo.

Eth isn't the only coin mined now, and it won't be the only coin mined in November is a long time off - but thanks for the heads up.

I've made a grand in the past month mining ETH. So people aren't necessarily full of shit, unless they are implying/believing the returns are going to stay that high, because yes, that number is going to go way down with time. :(

My point is that many people claim they make hundreds or thousands of dlls every month, and make it sound like you'll make easy money. Certainly The guy from tweaktown may be making what he claims, but that doesn't mean he's making a profit. He has spent piles of money, certainly not got a get it back anytime soon.

cool

what's your rig?

Sure, I guess a lot of it depends on how they word it or what they're claiming. If I take that grand and stop mining today and sell just the cards from the rig, I'd be up a couple hundred bucks, so I consider it profitable already. Never mind that I can continue running it for a few more months and still do the same in the end.

I think we did this already in another thread. ;) Six RX 580s plus a 1080 I already had in my main computer.

haha - too right! very nice

Hey, so just curious, what are you mining on your 1080? I just set mine up a few days ago and have it dual mining Eth and Sia right now. Got what seems to be a good mix at about 21 MH/s and 1100 MH/s, respectively, but just wondering if I could set it up differently for better profitability.

The problem with the goofy "I'm making $5000 a month!!!" Tweaktown article and all the $$$GET RICH NOW$$$ youtube videos - is they're based on lots of wildly wrong assumptions. You can't extrapolate how much you're going to make "per month" based on profitability per day, because that would require everything staying exactly the same. And as we've seen recently with profitability almost cut in half from what it was just 10 days ago, everything changes.

Difficulty increasing exponentially, a hundred new chinese superfarms a day jumping in, every disinterested kid with a gaming PC running a 1-click tool .. Add them up and if anything is guaranteed, it's that profitability next week or next month will NOT be what it is today.

My tips are

Don't quit your day job.

Don't start buying GPU's on credit cards.

Don't count your profits before they're hatched.

Just ETH at around 22-23MH. I haven't messed around with dual mining at all.

the real money is in buying and selling. Or if you luckily happen to mine and hold an alt coin that sky rockets in price.
