965BE max voltage / overclock potential

Right now I got a solid 600mhz overclock on my 965be with just changing the multiplier to 20, haven't even touched the voltage yet and it seems to be mostly stable. It blue screened once after I tried out a multiplier of 21 after getting stuck in the endless reboot cycle when I got ballsy and tried out 22.

Cooling isn't really an issue, I'm only pulling 40 degrees after a few hours of running prime 95.

Just curious to see what others have gotten out of this chip and what I can expect, I'm stoked that it's stable at 4ghz, to me that's a nice solid number. If I could get another 400mhz out of it, I'd even be happier, because then, I would have a solid 1ghz overclock.

I'm pretty impressed with this $60 motherboard, for a Microcenter combo deal, it hasn't let me down.
 
what voltage is it at ?

Try putting it in the BISO to 1.45, and then doing 21 multi
 
hmm, stock voltage is lower than that, it is auto putting that up.....


try putting at 1.5 then....temps will go up a bit.....should hit 21 there....you may be hitting a wall on other parts(NB), you may have to do FSB overclocking to get it farther
 
Max safe voltage for everyday use is 1.55v, as stated by AMD. You'll probably top out around 4.2-4.3 IBT stable. Intel Burn Test is the app to use to push the CPU to the max, temp wise at least. It'll stress the CPU more than Prime95 and has always resulted in a 7-10c temperature increase.
 
Yeah, I thought stock voltage was supposed to be 1.4. I'm not sure now.

I wonder if I should mess around with the HT link speed or any of that jazz. The last bit of overclocking I did was Socket-A days, taking a 2500+ barton and turning it into a 3200+ or whatever it was.

Back then it was easy, multiplier, bus, voltage. More stuff to screw around with / screw up now.
 
You don't need to raise the HTT speed unless you're wanting to overclock the memory or want to gain a few extra Mhz. Single socket systems have no need for the HyperTranspot link to run more than 1.8Ghz(900 Mhz base clock).
The big thing to overclock other than the CPU itself is the IMC/Northbridge. It's fairly easy to get it at 2.6Ghz and does help in most circumstances. It lowers the memory latency and forces the L3 cache to run faster. And since your CPU is a B.E., all you need to do is change a couple of multipliers and raise the voltage a smidge.
 
My 955 is more stable at higher speeds with the NB raised. Look up guides on overclocking these processors and they will give a table with tests on which NBs are the most stable. For 4ghz you want a 2,600mhz NB and probably a .1 voltage bump on the NB. That should give you a good stability boost when pushing higher.
