8gb BSODing my PC

My pc has been running fine for the past few months now but I wanted more ram so I ordered another 4gb set of OCZ SLI ram, same speed, same everything but now my pc just BSODs when all 4 dimms are in place. I tried taking one dimm out for a total of 6gb but that also gave me a BSOD right after the windows safe mode message. Also, sometimes my pc won't even post with the 4 dimms. My screen will either be blank with the gpu fan at full speed or it'll hang on the post and just freeze. Any help would be great (PC1 in sig).
 
Do you have Service Pack 1 installed for Vista? Pre-Service Pack 1 has issues seeing more than 8 GB on certain systems.

If not, install SP1 w/o the extra ram, once you have SP1 pop in the ram and you should be good to go.
 
Have you run Memtest86+ on your ram ??

The first thing I do with with new ram is to run Memtest on it.
I've found over the years that test 1 shows errors if you have a dead stick and test 5 shows errors if the sticks dont work together.
If you can run 3 loops without errors then your memory will normally be ok.
The other thing I tend to do is overclock the box and then run memtest to see if its the CPU or Memory that fail first.

Hi, Vista 64 needs SP1 or a patch to run over 4gb of RAM. Without SP1 (or a patch that is available) you will never be stable. I know this from personal experience.

If you have SP1 installed and still have issues, test each stick alone in slot 1. You can then be sure you have 4 good sticks. Be sure you have the memory voltage set as recommended. You may need a little more voltage, or need to run 8gb at a somewhat slower speed (if overclocking) due to the higher load on your memory controller.

isn't it possible that his mobo can't deal with 4 dimms at the fsb he is running? try going back to stock fsb and using 4 dimms, I know im limited to about 410fsb with 4 dimms, and closer to 500 with 2,

btw 8gb sucks =( usage only went over 4gb once so far for me!
 
You can also check for BIOS upgrades. It could have been an existing problem with your firmware that was resolved. What mobo you using?
 
how about trying more voltage or relaxing the timing a little bit. u gotta do that with all slots populated
 
Thanks for the help! I have SP1 installed so I think I'm good to go there. Right now I only have my E6600 clocked to 3.0ghz so the ram is running at 668mhz instead of 800mhz. I have memory voltage set at +.4 so on my P35C I think that's about 2.2v which is the limit of the EVP warranty on the ram. Timings are at 5-4-4-15 so what the sticks are supposed to run at at DDR2 800 @ 2.1v. I'll try memtest today though and hopefully that'll help get thigns worked out.
 
Thanks, I did what you said and ran each stick in slot one and one of the new sticks hangs on the post screen after the post memtest so I think I'm gonna have to send it back for a replacement.

might not be the case here but I get BSOD every once in a while with 8g on my 680i P6N Diamond. I can memtest either pair of 2x2 all day long but when I put 8g memtest gives errors right away.
 
Any of you guys running 4 up, keep in mind you may need to tweak your NB or memory controller voltages.
 
Thanks for the help, its nice that Corsair and OCZ have reps here to take care of their customers. I contacted the vendor and he suggested I replace it through OCZ so I think I'll be filing an RMA online.

My friend just got 4x1Gig sticks in his 680i M/B, with all slot populated it would BSOD and do all kind of stupid things, I memtested it, set the voltages did everything. What fixed it was mixing up the memory pairs for some reason. I have no idea why.

Running 4 sticks on a 680i board can be tricky! That's a pretty odd one there.
