$600 PS3 only has composite Cable :(

Everyone email, call, write, to Sony and tell them what you think about this decision to use composite cables with this package.

Thats japan only, atleast wait until they announce what comes in the NA package.

edit:
this thursday we should hear something.

http://biz.gamedaily.com/industry/news/?id=14076
SCEA has once again reiterated that they have not announced anything about the cables for the PS3 in the U.S. but they did confirm to GameDaily BIZ that we can "look for that news next Thursday." Perhaps next Thursday will include a series of announcements, including controller and accessories pricing, detail on the PlayStation Network Platform, and more? Stay tuned.

It kind of sucks that it seems like no electronics device out there seems to come with the cables you need to take full advantage of the products features (and thats regardless of the company that makes it). I'm sure they spend as much money on all the extra brochures\advertisments and junk that come with most products toady than they would on throwing in somethign useful.

Sony and retailers can both make a lot of money by selling cables.

cables have a ginormous profit margin, the console does not, it actually sells at a loss; with cables, games, accessories and overpriced online content making up for it in a big way

when i went to buy my HDTV it didnt come with component or HDMI cables, not only did the store want me to pay $1500 for the TV, but then pay $130 for a 6ft HDMI cable

in the end i got the cable at cost, like $25, that's why Sony would much rather sell it separately

I would like to think sony will be smart enoungh not to try this in the US but who knows.

im pretty tired of electronic device that doesnt give me what i need to run them ... ( cough ipod cough psp cough)

oh well... it seems its a new way to make money

cables are the worse markup in stores. you pay 30-40 for what costs them 1-5

There was another topic about this very issue about a month back.

There won't be an HDMI cable packaged with the console. That's it.
It's too expensive to include with a console. Most HDMI-supported televisions don't even come with it, or even receivers. Why would the PS3?

Exactly.

Well the question here is, does the PS3 have an HDMI out on the back of the system or will I need to buy proprietary stuff to use the HDMI?

My TV has two HDMIs so if I can buy a standard HDMI cable, I won't be so mad.

HDMI cables are not expensive. Businesses simply charge a ton of money for cables to make up for the smaller profit margins on the devices they are used with. Also, the whole "premium cable" thing is simply a way of taking advantage of the general public's gullibility - they really think that they're going to get that much better of a signal to justify the purchase of some $150 cable (if it costs more, it must be better... right?).

i dont understand the need for HDMI right now, video quality-wise, there's no discernable difference between component and HDMI

and as far as audio goes, i always want to run a separate optical or coax audio SPDIF cable to my surround receiver for audio, HDMI on the PS3 will only allow for audio and video through one cable, but using the TV speakers is no good, so you may as well run component for video and a separate optical or coax SPDIF cable for audio to your surround receiver

yes, a standard HDMI cable will work

When it comes to componant cables, spending extra cash on some nice Monster cables isn't that bad of a deal, because it's an analog signal and with that insulation and good wiring Monster produces, you actually will get a slightly better picture. But for HDMI, a pure digital signal, the 10 dollar HDMI cable and the 150 dollar HDMI cable are exactly the same.

And Sony just shoots themselves in the foot every day. Fuck, even the XBox 360 premium came with componant cables. Sigh...

yeah, thats why no HDMI on the 360 was not a deal breaker for me, because i already plan on using my surround receiver for audio, and nobody has ever been able to show me a difference in video quality going from Component to HDMI, and I also own several devices that use one or the other or both and have tried multiple configurations, and there's no difference

Thats because they are the same cable. It is just that bb/compusa/cc etc charge out the ass for the cable. Same with them charging 30 bucks or so for a usb cable. Cable is the same quality as a 5 dollar cable. It is just where you buy it.

As far as monster cables go they are not worth the retail price. If you can get them at a fair price great. If not then you can usually find better.

He was referring to the fact that with a digital signal, it is either a 1 or a 0. There is no inbetween. So slighty noise introduced along the way cant distort the final result. With an analog signal (componEnt cables) you can have noise introduced, because there is no absolute value of the signal and thus it can be distorted.

Even if it's a digital signal, I still believe in using a high quality cable. The various forms of error correction can only do so much. When I got my Toshiba HD-DVD player, I only used the factory HDMI cables for 2 movies before I went out and bought a set of good Monster HDMI cables. The difference in image quality was staggering, and the color definition and accuracy was especially improved. People think Monster cables are a waste of money, but I don't.

I first read that as "PS3 will only come with component cables". That would be lame enough....but then i actually read, and it's "PS3 will only come with COMPOSITE cables" and I threw up in my mouth a bit. No component even? In the 600 dollar PS3? good god that's pathetic.

This is very old news.

A) The cable costs $5. What other console manufacturer lets you use standard cables?

B) The ps3 also uses the same multi-out as the ps2 so its component/svideo cables are compatible if thats all you need. What other console manufacturer lets you reuse cables?

I'm all for rampant sony bashing, but please point out what they do right in this area and what other companies are doing wrong as well.

If this is true.... and it probably is.... all the more reason to make fun of Sony even more. Those morons!!

No offense, but I snicker in your general direction, and I'm sure I'm not the only one.

Are they coated in snake oil to prevent bit lossage? I find that to be the biggest problem with digital cables; they often don't have Monster's proprietary Bit-Lock Loss Prevention Matrix Fiber, without which, the 1s and 0s of the original signal will leak out of the shielding fabric, thus causing degradation of the image.

Analog signals do depend on quality of cable. Digital signals do not, as long as they're properly shielded and terminated. You're wasting your money.

lol! you [pwend the n00b gj !!
:p

yeah digital cable isn't subject to interference. if a signal is muddied enough you just don't get any signal at all, not a "degraded" signal. derrrrrrrrrrrr

Why do you say probably is? did no one read my post on the 1st page? It's just for japan, they said to expect an announcement regarding the cables in the NA market very soon. The fact that japan got a mean price cut compared to us makes me think that we will get more in our boxes than they do.

it appears that we will need to wait until later this week to find out.

From my understanding a TV is similar to a monitor, it it a "sink" for images. Most people purchase TVs in order to watch "television". In most households serviced by cable companies, the TV signal is transmitted via coaxial cables, at least on the customer premises. The source for television signals is therefore a coaxial cable. The only thing that most people would need is a coax cable, but since this is provided by the cable co upon installation, there's no need to supply that with the TV.

A PS3 is a singal source, just like the calbe television. It would be expected for the image source to come with the required cable in order to enjoy this.

most people these days with cable are going digital cable, and using a standard coax cable is defeating the purpose when the digital box has component and hdmi outputs

ah geez!

Why doesn't anyone complain that Wii doesn't come with component cables either?

I'm right there with PS3 being expensive but come on!

because we are all well aware that those that really want to use their Wii will have to spend a rediculous amount for accessories already, it's expected with the Wii

Because last I checked, not all Wii games were going to be 480P, nor was Nintendo marketing the Wii as an HD machine...hence the component cables are unnecessary. However, Sony is marketing the PS3 as a high-def machine, so selling the cables necessary to actually run HD resolutions is slightly sheisty. True, people would have bitched regardless of what they do: if they included component cables, the standard def people would have complained about buying composites, and the HD people are bitching because only composites are included. However, since they're marketing the whole machine towards the HD crowd in the first place, you'd think they would have gone with the percentages.

yall are complaining about nothing...come on...a 7 dollar cable...11 dollars with shipping...WOOOWWW ...OH SHOOT...LET ME PUT IN OVERTIME! sheesh yall will prolly spend more than that on some mcdonalds for lunch or somethin....is this somethin to truly argue over? to say sony is wack because they didnt give you a 7 dollar cable....step back and really look at what your trying to argue...

its not even that serious...

What the cable costs and what they charge for it are different things. If you think Sony will be selling HDMI cables for $7, you're delusional.

It may not be that serious for HDMI - assuming Sony is using the standard interface, then any old HDMI cable works fine, comparison shopping FTW! However, if one wants component cables (and doesn't have a set of PS2 cables sitting around), then the price goes up to at least the $20-30 range. The fact that the Xbox 360 comes in at $400 with both composite and component connections in the box is likely also a factor in folks' concern that their $500-600 PS3 could arrive with just NTSC in the box.

The PS3 uses a standard HDMI plug. If you're paying significantly more than $7 for a 6ft cable you may be the one with delusions (buy your $7 cables here).

I would like to see what sony will price an offical "PS3 HDMI cable" at though.

nobody said you have to buy a sony hdmi cable...get one off newegg or something...
ditto

its digital signal, there's no loss, nor is there interference. either the signal works or doesn't. so a 7 dollar cable is just fine. heck a 3 dollar cable off monoprice.com is great.
and i agree with the first page poster, until Thursday we don't now anything.

my guess is it will come with hdmi, and component will be separate. after all, ebgames already has available for preorder official component and s-video cables but not hdmi cables, i wonder why?

but we will still hear complaints even then that people without hdmi are going to say, "Sony should have put in all possible cables in the world...or Sony is trying to force us to get new TVs..."

ps3 is an HD machine, they should include HD cables. the 360 comes in at 200 bucks less for the "premium" edition...and they include...you got it, HD cables. PS3 should have component cables with the 600 dollar package. To those who are saying "OMG THEY ONLY COST 7 BUCKS"...exactly...sony should include them along with the ridiculously expensive premium package they're selling.

Digital signals are subject to the same types of noise, interference, attenuation, etc. as any other kind of electrical signal. However with most digital signalling schemes these effects do not typically impact the recovery of the original data at the reciever, especially at the short lengths found in most home systems.

I stand by my opinion that I think Monster cables are worth it to me. Whether they are worth it to you guys, is a matter of personal opinion. I understand this entire digital thing, but there was a huge difference in image quality when I forked over the cash for the Monster cables. Everything looked so much more vibrant, and the color definition was incredibly more accurate. I have seen the results with my eyes, and that's all that matters to me. If the digital signal was being lost via the cheap packaged cables, then I shouldn't have seen an improvement. I also like how the Monster HDMI's are nice and heavy duty. I've got so many components stacked together, that it's nice to know the cable is protected in case something falls on it. If you guys think that Monster is a waste of money, don't feed the beast.
