Just bought a Saphire radeon hd 5850!!!!
Wondering what some essential programs are that I should download?
Is Catalyst sufficient?
Also, I've overclocked it to the max the program allowed... which wasn't much... which is lame... How do I get around this?
Anyone have suggestions for clock speeds, as well as what I should run the fan at?
Pretty stoked, hope I can get some good help :)

I did the catalyst automatic tune... ended up with a weird blue screen at one point just viewing a forum =|

here are the tools you need,

a bios that allow higher overclocks, and flash your card with that, I had a 5870 but I don't game that much and it was a bad purchase of my part but I didn't have any trouble selling it for the price I got it for, so I got the hd 5850 and saved about 120 bucks, was lucky enough to find one in stock at microcenter. mine is diamond. long story short here is what I did.

I dowloaded ati flash, and downloaded the asus bios make sure you download the latest one by date from techpowerup.com

next I flashed it with atiflash through my bootable usb flash drive.

here is what you type when you boot from the flash drive, you have to have the bios and ati flash on the flash drive.

atiflash.exe -p -f 0 biosname.bin

you can rename the bios before you put it on the flash drive to make it easier on yourself, and you can use gpuz to save your cards bios if you wanna flash it back to default, you don't have to worry about that as you can always downlaod it again.

next after you reboot and reboot again after the install of drivers. you download msi afterburner and change the voltage and core clock and memory, the sad part is msi burner wont go past overdrive clock speeds unless you have the bios flashed that has the oc limits increased, as far as I know.

I have mine running at 1.299v at 1000core and 1250 memory and it actually performs faster than hd 5870 at those speeds when I compared my dirt 2 benchmark with the hd 5870 online and it is actually around 6fps faster on average and around 10fps faster when it comes to minimum speeds.

make sure you control the fan speed parameters in afterburner it is kinda fool proof all you have to do is use your mouse button to adjust the graph, I have mine usually running at in the 40% range, it doesn't sound like a jet engine at those speeds and the temps never exceed high 60's. plus when I have the speakers up It I can't even hear it, only while gaming it goes up to that percentage, at idle I have it set in the 20's.

you can make a usb bootable windows 98 disk, just use your best friend google.


bios flash sounds dangerous but trust me it is the easiest thing out of the whole process, and you will be surprised how fast and easy it is, it just sounds scarier than it actually is, you only have to do this once and than you don't even have to touch overdrive just use afterburner and click apply settings at startup, powerplay still works. once you flash you will be glad you did. And this is the longest post of my career at hardocp, lol.

you can wait for rivatuner, but rivatuner designer is busy working on msi afterburner, I mean really busy thats why we haven't seen a new rivatuner for a while.
